Electrical Systems Technician II - Mechanical Maintenance (Public Works)

Base Pay: $22.66 Hourly. Summary Under general supervision, responsible for installation, diagnosis, and repair of electrical systems in county buildings, including jail facilities. Performs other maintenance duties as needed, including work on various control systems, heating and air conditioning systems and plumbing. Must be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by the supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform a wide variety of moderately complex construction tasks, preventative maintenance and repair work on equipment, building components, electrical systems and facilities. Build additions to existing electrical systems. Install electrical conduit, wires, panels, fixtures and switches. Oversee work of Electrical Systems Technician I. Determine causes of problems and repair malfunctions in high‑voltage switchgear and electrical distribution systems. Troubleshoot and repair electronic jail door control systems. Act as an inspector for electrical contractors. Troubleshoot and repair systems including access‑control, video camera surveillance, fire alarms, paging, fuel dispensing, and cable TV wiring. Provide for periodic relamping of light fixtures in various county facilities. Install and repair electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of machinery and equipment. Inspect and test electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits. Isolate defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and replace faulty components. Interpret blueprints, sketches and schematic drawings of electrical circuits. Mount motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures in position and complete circuits per diagram specifications. Repair magnetic starters and remote start‑stop stations; operate and maintain high‑and low‑voltage switches; install rigid, thin‑wall, and flexible conduit. Assist in maintenance and renovation of electrical service. Perform other related duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities May provide direction to an Electrical Systems Technician I and carry out responsibilities in accordance with Nueces County policies and applicable laws. Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED plus at least five years of building maintenance experience, including preventive maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, access control systems, video surveillance systems, fire alarms and paging systems, buildings and facilities. Equivalent combinations of experience and training may be considered for current Nueces County employees only. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and physics; compute formulas and estimate amperage and voltage. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License; background check required; comply with county driving record standards if transporting vehicle on official business. Other Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of moderately complex electrical construction and repair and related safety standards; ability to perform complex maintenance and repair work while observing safety procedures; work independently; operate and maintain a variety of power tools, manual tools, and equipment; perform necessary mathematical calculations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees and officials; operate voltmeter and electrical test equipment. Physical Demands The employee regularly uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; frequently stands, walks, reaches with hands and arms, climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls; occasionally sits, talks, or hears; often lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific visual abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment Work near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock; high, precarious places and outdoor conditions; occasional wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles; noise level ranges from moderate to loud depending on assignment. #J-18808-Ljbffr
