Accounting Manager - Cost Accounting (Manufacturing)

Overview

We are partnering with a growing manufacturing organization in Chicago to hire an Accounting Manager with a strong background in cost accounting. This role will lead core accounting operations, oversee financial reporting, and manage a team of two Senior Accountants. The ideal candidate brings deep manufacturing experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and the ability to drive process improvements in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the month-end and year-end close processes , ensuring timely and accurate reporting
  
• Oversee and manage cost accounting functions , including inventory valuation, standard costing, variance analysis, and margin analysis
  
• Review and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS), labor, and overhead variances
  
• Supervise and develop a team of 2 Senior Accountants , providing guidance and performance feedback
  
• Maintain and review general ledger activity, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  
• Partner with operations and plant leadership to provide financial insights and support decision-making
  
• Lead and support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
  
• Coordinate with external auditors and manage the annual audit process
  
• Strengthen and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
  
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains within the accounting function
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  
• 6+ years of progressive accounting experience
  
• Strong cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment required
  
• Proven experience managing or mentoring staff (direct oversight preferred)
  
• Deep understanding of inventory, standard costing, and variance analysis
  
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
  
• Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, JD Edwards, NetSuite, Dynamics)
  
• Advanced Excel skills
  
• CPA preferred
