Speech Language Pathologist

The primary purpose of a speech therapist is to assess, diagnose, treat, and help communication and swallowing disorders in students under the direction of the Director of Special Education. Prerequisites include a Master's Degree, Speech Language Pathologist License, and supervised clinical experience. Major responsibilities and duties include conducting full and individual evaluations as part of the multi-disciplinary evaluation team, preparing evaluation reports, maintaining a list of students requiring three-year reevaluation, creating and carrying out an individualized treatment plan, teaching students how to make sounds and improve their voices, counseling students and families on how to cope with communication disorders, meeting and conferring with teachers about methods and techniques for dealing with disorders, making appropriate referrals, arranging for necessary materials and equipment, attending district meetings and required workshops, providing written reports for parents and applicable personnel, participating in the Admission Review Dismissal Committee, compiling, reviewing, and interpreting new information, maintaining confidentiality of all student information, demonstrating awareness of school/community needs, providing staff development training, assisting classroom teachers with the implementation of the IEP, consulting with parents concerning educational needs, participating in the district school health and related services program, complying with policies established by federal and state law, managing caseload and assignments, collecting and organizing relevant assessment data, compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents for billing, providing clinical supervision to intern or trainee, and performing other related duties as assigned by supervisor. Mental demands include working with frequent interruptions and maintaining emotional control under stress. Physical demands involve prolonged sitting, occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting, repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse, occasional reaching, and occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds). The environment may involve working prolonged or irregular hours.
