Overview

The Interior Technician fabricates, upholsters, finishes, and installs premium interior components for Velocity's classic vehicles. This role follows build specifications, approved patterns, work instructions, quality standards, and production priorities to deliver accurate work on schedule. The technician protects craftsmanship, material quality, documentation, and downstream vehicle flow while continuously developing upholstery and trim skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interior Fabrication and Upholstery

• Fabricate, upholster, wrap, finish, and install assigned interior components in accordance with build specifications, approved patterns, samples, and quality standards.

• Operate industrial sewing machines and approved hand and power tools safely; perform routine machine and tool care within the technician's training level.

• Work with leather, vinyl, fabric, foam, carpet, composites, acrylic, StarBoard, adhesives, fasteners, and related trim materials as assigned.

• Measure, fit, align, and finish components accurately, including work performed in confined areas of vehicle interiors.

• Adapt upholstery materials and approved techniques to achieve consistent fit, appearance, durability, and function.

Quality and Documentation

• Verify the work order, build sheet, specifications, materials, and assigned priority before beginning work; ask for clarification when information conflicts or is incomplete.

• Inspect incoming materials and completed work for color, grain, fit, finish, function, damage, and conformance to specifications before handoff.

• Identify and report shortages, defects, damage, incorrect materials, or process concerns immediately to prevent delays and avoidable rework.

• Complete required SOS, sign-off, quality, labor, and production records accurately and on time.

• Take clear required photographs of completed work for customer service, quality, and internal records.

Production and Team Standards

• Complete assigned work in the approved priority sequence and communicate any risk to quality, labor hours, or due dates before a commitment is missed.

• Support teammates and cross-train within the Trim Shop to maintain department flow and meet vehicle completion requirements.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and efficiently organized workstation, tools, materials, racks, and work-in-process.

• Follow standard work, safety procedures, dress-code requirements, and required personal protective equipment practices.

• Arrive on time, professionally prepared, and ready to work at the scheduled start of the shift.

• Participate in continuous improvement by identifying repeat quality issues, waste, unclear instructions, and opportunities to improve safety or flow.

Execution Authority

• Confirm part completion and process completion only for work the technician is trained, qualified, and assigned to perform.

• Identify part needs, material needs, process concerns, and improvement opportunities, and communicate them through the established department process.

• Exercise additional authority for material purposing, material billing, sewing, patterning, technician training, project planning, or project completion only when specifically assigned and competency-approved by the Trim Shop Manager.

• Stop and escalate work when specifications conflict, required materials are unavailable, quality is at risk, or the task exceeds the technician's approved authority.

Key Performance Indicators

• Billable labor utilization: Maintain at least 97% billable hours to payroll, excluding approved indirect time.

• On-time completion: Complete at least 95% of assigned work by the committed production date, or escalate a documented blocker before the date is missed.

• Labor-hour performance: Complete assigned work within established vehicle and task-hour goals; performance is reviewed against the current production plan.

• First-pass quality: Complete and self-inspect assigned work before handoff. Work is expected to meet approved specifications and quality standards without avoidable technician-caused rework, correction, or replacement. Recurring quality issues, preventable defects, and failure to report known concerns will be reviewed as part of performance.

• Documentation and sign-off: Complete 100% of required SOS, quality, labor, and photo documentation before handoff.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Strong attention to detail and the manual dexterity required for precise upholstery, sewing, wrapping, fitting, and installation work.

• Ability to read and follow build sheets, work instructions, measurements, patterns, material direction, and quality standards.

• Ability to distinguish colors, shades, grain direction, alignment, surface defects, and finish differences.

• Commitment to producing high-quality work and learning new tools, materials, techniques, and standardized processes.

• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to receive verbal and written direction, adjust priorities, and communicate concerns clearly and promptly.

• Ability to work overtime when required by production needs.

• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from work.

• Ability to meet company pre-employment and employment requirements, including mandatory drug screening.

Education Background and Experience

• No formal degree is required; demonstrated aptitude, craftsmanship, reliability, and ability to learn are essential.

• Experience operating sewing machines or performing upholstery, trim, fabrication, or vehicle-interior work is preferred; role-specific training may be provided.

• Prior automotive, marine, aviation, furniture, or custom upholstery experience is preferred.

Physical Demands (To include but not limited to)

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and reaching throughout the shift, including work above the shoulders and below the waist.

• Regular lifting and carrying of tools, parts, seats, panels, and materials up to 50 pounds; team lift or mechanical assistance is required above that weight or when an item cannot be handled safely by one person.

• Frequent and repetitive use of hands, wrists, arms, and fingers for sewing, cutting, stretching, fastening, tool operation, and detailed manual work.

• Ability to safely enter, exit, and work within vehicle interiors and around vehicles, carts, racks, tools, and production equipment.

• Visual acuity sufficient to evaluate measurements, alignment, surface quality, color, shade, and finish.

Work Environment

• Work is performed primarily in an automotive production and trim-shop environment with regular exposure to shop noise, dust, vehicle movement, and temperature variation.

• The role may involve exposure to adhesives, cleaners, solvents, foam dust, leather and fabric fibers, and other materials used in automotive upholstery; required PPE is provided and must be used.

• Work is performed near sewing machines, cutting equipment, hand tools, power tools, racks, carts, and partially completed vehicles.
