About CJA The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. CJA is the city’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof. It provides procedural justice practices to over 100,000 persons arrested annually in New York City. CJA’s programs operate in the criminal courts and detention facilities 24 hours a day, seven days a week across all five boroughs, employing over 300 employees citywide. Position Summary Reporting to the Supervising Clinical Case Manager and under the direction of the Clinical Director, the Case Manager works on a team serving youth and adult clients (ages 16 and older). The role builds relationships with participants and their support systems, coaching and connecting them with resources such as education, employment programs, career assessments and other opportunities aligned with individual goals. Primary Responsibilities Client Needs Assessments Conduct intake/assessment interviews to identify participants’ needs and risk factors for recidivism. Assess mental health and substance abuse problems, making external referrals as appropriate. Work with clients to explore interests and create plans toward goal attainment. Assess school and/or job readiness and connect young participants to appropriate programming, trainings and peer support services. Verify participant contact information and assign activities aligned with supervision levels. Client Engagement Build relationships with participants aged 16 and older. Collaborate with support systems such as guardians and significant others. Review release conditions, program agreement and disclosures. Maintain face‑to‑face and telephone contact, monitor re‑arrests and prepare court reports. Utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, including interactive journaling, when applicable. Run psycho‑educational and supportive psychotherapeutic groups for participants aged 16‑24. Motivate participants to engage in voluntary services. Documentation and Reporting Update case‑management appointments and produce periodic compliance reports. Write formal progress reports for each court date and advocate for graduated sanctions when eligible. Complete all required documentation and maintain database reporting standards. Teamwork and Relationship Building Maintain professional communication with defense attorneys, Assistant District Attorneys and referral agencies. Appear and advocate in court regarding participants’ compliance. Participate in clinical supervision, case conferences, staff meetings and training; identify opportunities for staff development. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, criminal justice or related field. At least two years of case‑management experience, including one year with an adolescent population. Willingness to work evening and weekend hours as operations expand. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of NYC court operations. Familiarity with Alternative to Detention, Alternative to Incarceration or other advocacy program models. Knowledge of treatment programs (substance abuse, mental health, etc.) and support services (GED, job training, YIP). Ability to exercise sound and quick judgment. Excellent communication, writing and time‑management skills. Computer literate and adaptable to new technologies. Preferred bilingual skills (Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, French‑Creole). Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or CASAC in Trainee (CASACT) encouraged. Note: The position operates on a hybrid schedule with in‑person work four days per week and one remote day. Remote and on‑site responsibilities align with CJA policy at hire. Salary $67,165 Location Long Island City or Kew Gardens. Internal applicants must have at least one year in their current role and be in good standing (no disciplinary action within the last 90 days).
