Technician II- Automotive

The vehicle technician works under the direct supervision of the Technician I and the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Fleet and the Director of Transportation. They are responsible for repair and upkeep of all vehicles, under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Department.

Major responsibilities include:

• Demonstrating prompt and regular attendance.
• Determining general condition of vehicles, analyzing malfunctions of diesel or gasoline engines by visual or auditory examination or by testing equipment.
• Operating engine to locate external damage, loose or excessively worn parts or accessories.
• Checking fuel and cooling system for cleanliness and general condition.
• Fueling all system owned vehicles and maintaining daily list of disbursal of fuel and oil consumption.
• Inspecting batteries by testing with hydrometer, checking amount of corrosion, and conditions of terminals.
• Checking oil and water levels of all system vehicles on a regular basis.
• Checking fan belts and cooling system hoses for wear and replacements.
• Checking and inspecting the fuel tanks for leakage on a weekly basis recording measurements on the proper forms.
• Breaking down and mounting tires on an as needed basis at the direction of the Technician I.
• Being responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the fuel dispersal site (gas and diesel fuel pumps) and general area.
• Being responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the work bays under the supervision of the Technician I.
• Maintaining an overall clean, safe work environment.
• Road testing equipment at the direction of the Technician I.
• Maintaining favorable employee relations.
• Maintaining and being responsible for maintenance and security of assigned equipment and tools.
• Complying with any reasonable oral or written directive(s) from the Technician I, Assistant Director of Fleet, Director of Transportation or other appropriate system level administrator.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities include thorough knowledge of mechanics; ability to keep suitable records of job performance; possess a valid driver’s license; ability to follow written and oral instructions (map reading and learning locations of schools in the city); familiarize himself with accounting.
