Correctional Electronics Technician – Osborn Correctional Institution, Somers, CT The Connecticut Department of Correction is recruiting a Correctional Electronics Technician for a full‑time position at Osborn Correctional Institution. The role involves the maintenance, repair, and installation of a wide range of electronic security systems and equipment in a correctional environment. Employment Details Full‑time, 36.25 hours per week. First Shift Monday‑Friday, 7:45 AM – 3:00 PM. Key Responsibilities Maintenance and repair of facility door programmable logic controllers (PLC) and interlock systems Metal detectors Facility intercom and paging systems Intrusion alarm systems (sensors, infrared, microwave) Fence alarms CT Video Recorders, monitors, and surveillance cameras Fire alarm systems Environmental direct digital controls (DDC) Handheld radios, base station radio equipment, and repeaters Man‑down alarm sensors and systems UPS/ battery backup units for all security‑based systems Low voltage distribution systems Training Selected candidates will attend a fourteen‑week training program at the CTDOC Training Academy. Position Highlights Professional growth and development opportunities Healthy work‑life balance Excellent pension plan Purpose of Job Class Accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks and/or acting as a working supervisor for inmates in the repair, maintenance, and installation of various electronic security systems and equipment. Examples of Duties Perform technical duties in installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of highly technical security, surveillance, life safety, alarm systems, and communication equipment Fabricate special electronic devices and systems as needed Use a variety of testing and measuring equipment to locate electronic malfunctions, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair systems and equipment Train, instruct, and supervise inmates assigned to an electronics repair shop in calibration and testing of electronic equipment and systems such as television cameras, monitors, telecommunication receivers and transmitters, radios, and public address equipment Act as a liaison with outside vendors for ordering parts, troubleshooting problems, and researching solutions to technical problems Maintain inventory of replacement parts Inspect and/or test fire alarm equipment to comply with Connecticut’s State Fire Prevention Code and State Fire Safety Code Perform daily key and tool control counts Keep accurate and detailed records and make necessary reports Work with Correctional Locksmiths and General Maintenance Officers on a work‑assignment basis Maintain custody, evaluate performance, and discipline inmates assigned to work areas Perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines as needed Physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances, and assist security forces in emergencies Operate a motor vehicle when required Perform related duties as required Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Considerable knowledge of electronics principles, maintenance, installation, and servicing of electronic security systems Specialized test equipment used in servicing electronic equipment Materials, methods, tools, and equipment involved in electronic repair and installation work Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills Ability to quickly and accurately analyze electronic malfunctions Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and instruction manuals Operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems Maintain records and prepare reports Instruct inmates in electronics maintenance techniques and skills Perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations Supervisory ability Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years of experience in electronics repair One (1) year of the general experience must have been at the highly skilled level College training in electronics may be substituted for the general experience, up to two (2) years for an Associate’s degree (15 semester hours = ½ year) Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a certificate in electronics may be substituted for one (1) year of the general experience Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may be substituted for the general and special experience on a year‑for‑year basis Preferred Qualifications Experience with maintenance or repair of PLC and interlock systems, metal detectors, intercom systems, paging systems, intrusion alarm systems, fence alarms, CT Video Recorders, surveillance cameras, fire alarm systems, environmental DDC, handheld radios, base station radio equipment and repeaters, man‑down alarm sensors and systems, and low voltage distribution systems Special Requirements Must be at least 18 years old Must possess a high school diploma or GED certification at the time of appointment May be required to complete a formal training course in correctional work May be required to respond to after‑hour emergencies as requested by facility supervisors May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and to travel Character Requirements In addition to reference and factual checks, a thorough background investigation will be conducted before appointment. Physical Requirements Must have general good health, be free from disease or injury that impairs health or usefulness, and possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, visual and auditory acuity required to perform all duties. Working Conditions May be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates and the danger and discomfort of working with electrical equipment.
