  • # Assistant Director- Grant and Contract AccountingApplylocations: Seattle, WAtime type: Full timeposted on: Posted Todaytime left to apply: End Date: May 31, 2026 (15 days left to apply)job requisition id: REQ-0000131099**Job Description**## Finance, Planning, and Budgeting (FPB) encompasses the major central financial, planning, analytical, and budgeting functions for the University of Washington, including:* Financial Stewardship & Operations* Institutional Analytics & Decision Support* Budget, Policy & Strategy* University Business ServicesGrant and Contract Accounting (GCA) is responsible for leading University-wide post-award research administration, providing essential services in accounting, compliance analysis, invoicing, and financial reporting to both internal and external stakeholders. GCA ensures effective and accurate management of research funding, supports institutional compliance, and facilitates financial transparency across the University of Washington.The **Assistant Director** is responsible for implementing strategic initiatives and overseeing operational processes within Grant and Contract Accounting. This role manages a team of twenty, including four direct reports, and ensures the effective execution of post-award research administration activities, including accounting, compliance, invoicing, and financial reporting for the University. This position contributes to the development and implementation of GCA’s strategic direction, ensures adherence to departmental and institutional policies, and plays a key role in maintaining organizational effectiveness across a complex, high volume administrative environment. The Assistant Director regularly exercises independent judgment in matters related to operational planning, resource allocation, and staff management.**Key responsibilities include:*** Implement GCA operational practices that align with the University’s goals and ensure consistent, high-quality execution across all functional areas* Manage the recruitment, training, supervision, and professional development of staff to maintain a skilled, effective and engaged team* Directly oversee customer service activities, training programs, campus outreach efforts, and the management of escalated issues from internal and external stakeholders* Serve as a subject matter expert in Workday stabilization initiatives, supporting successful system integration, ensuring operational continuity, and overseeing accounting compliance across post-award research accounting* Collaborate with the Director on long‐range planning, policy development, and assessment of emerging issues affecting research administration operations across the university* Ensure compliance with federal, state, and University regulations by developing and enforcing internal controls, monitoring systems, and operational standards**Duties and Responsibilities:****Leadership / Team Management*** Lead and develop a team of post‐award grants and contracts professionals, providing coaching, performance management, and strategic direction in a complex, matrixed environment* Oversee operational workflows, aligning priorities, training, and staff development to ensure consistent, high‐quality service delivery* Drive continuous improvement by setting program goals, monitoring key milestones, and adjusting strategies to achieve successful outcomes* Resolve escalated issues promptly and serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on operational risks, staffing needs, and strategic priorities* Ensure adherence to institutional policies, interpreting and implementing guidance to strengthen organizational effectiveness and accountability**Accounting and Program Management*** Lead post‐award financial administration by ensuring compliance with federal, state, sponsor, and institutional regulations, and coordinating audits to resolve complex financial issues* Design, implement, and monitor robust internal control frameworks that safeguard assets, ensure accurate reporting, and maintain compliance with GAAP and University policy* Evaluate and refine reconciliation and accounting processes, identifying gaps and implementing improvements to strengthen financial accuracy and operational efficiency* Provide data‐driven financial analysis and expert guidance to leadership on financial risks, regulatory impacts, and long‐term compliance strategies* Partner with cross‐functional teams and campus stakeholders to strengthen financial processes, communicate regulatory changes, and support a culture of accountability and continuous improvement**Strategy Deployment*** Drive strategy execution by leading system integration efforts that enhance data integrity, real‐time visibility, and cross‐functional coordination across financial, compliance, and program platforms* Monitor KPIs and implement automated dashboards to advance data‐driven decision‐making, continuous improvement, and organizational accountability* Analyze portfolio performance through benchmarking and outcome‐based assessments to inform strategic planning and operational enhancements* Cultivate strong stakeholder partnerships and engagement plans to strengthen collaboration and maximize the impact of sponsored research initiatives* Provide strategic recommendations on technology investments, policy evolution, and operational innovations that align GCA operations with institutional goals and emerging regulatory trends**Requirements:*** Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, or related field and five years of work experience **OR** Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, and three years of progressive experience in grants/contract administration or related field. To include three (3)years of progressively responsible leadership/management experience; demonstrated commitment to developing others to become leaders* Demonstrated experience in working with diverse groups and teams; create a culture of inclusion and equity throughout the team while supporting the overall culture of FPB.* An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for a degree.* Demonstrated experience in governmental fund accounting* Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage complex portfolios* Exceptional analytical, organizational, and interpersonal abilities, with a proven capacity to solve complex problems, efficiently manage multiple priorities, and foster positive working relationships across diverse teams* Proficiency with accounting software or financial software* Excellent written and verbal communication skills* Demonstrated ability to foster collaborative working relationships and effectively navigate complex and sensitive administrative issues**Desired:*** Certified Public Accountant* Knowledge of Workday Finance* Progressive experience in grant/contract administration or related field* Knowledge of the University of Washington pre- and post-award policies and procedures* Expert knowledge of federal, state, and sponsor regulations (e.g., Uniform Guidance, FAR, agency-specific rules)We will begin screening completed application materials upon receipt through the close date.**Compensation, Benefits and Position Details****Pay Range Minimum:**$96,420.00 annual**Pay Range Maximum:**$120,000.00 annual**Other Compensation:**-**Benefits:**For information about benefits for this position, visit Shift (United States of America)**Temporary or Regular?**This is a regular position**FTE (Full-Time Equivalent):**100.00%**Union/Bargaining Unit:**Not Applicable
