Special Needs Bus Assistant -Transportation Department

Transportation Special Needs Bus Assistant Reports to: Transportation Director Department/School: Transportation Employment: Part‑time for 10 months (approximately 200 days). No benefits. Hourly rate set by the Board of Education. Duties and Responsibilities Assist, support, and receive direction from the school bus driver in day‑to‑day operations of pupil transportation. Assist special‑education students boarding and exiting the bus. Report any medical issues that a student may be having to the driver. Establish a safe and orderly bus environment. Secure wheelchairs and other special seating for special‑needs students when riding a special‑needs bus. Continuously observe students during transit to ensure they remain seated and safe, assist with student management and medical needs as needed. Talk with students about bus safety to maintain order throughout the trip. Discuss with the bus driver to determine how to handle individual student situations. Receive advice from school administration and provide feedback when needed. Build positive relationships with students, parents, bus drivers, and other district staff. Develop and apply knowledge of Bus Conduct and Discipline procedures for the school system. Maintain confidentiality of student information and bus issues. Attend all in‑services necessary for the job. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or Director of Schools. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Tennessee driver’s license. Effective communication with students and staff. Ability to maintain accurate records. Background checks: TBI/FBI, DCS, and a satisfactory medical examination. Pre‑employment physical and random drug testing required. CPR and First Aid training. Annual motor‑vehicle report (MVR). Additional Requirements and Conditions Employees will work on school bus routes and may be exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, bodily fluids, and other hazards; universal precautions are required. The role involves frequent standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, and lifting (up to 45 pounds). Work may be conducted under noise and biological‑hazard exposure.
