Job Description

The Instrumentation Technician performs a wide range of electro-mechanical manufacturing and testing activities in a production and laboratory environment with limited supervision. This role supports the build, test, and packaging of subassemblies and final instruments, ensures high product quality and accurate documentation, and collaborates closely with engineers to support experiments, product development, and continuous improvement of manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily electro-mechanical manufacturing and testing operations on subassemblies and final assemblies with limited supervision.
• Conduct laboratory testing on electro-mechanical devices and instruments, ensuring accuracy and reliability of test data.
• Handle, move, and organize production materials, including packaging of assemblies and instruments for shipment or further processing.
• Apply excellent workmanship standards to all builds and tests to ensure final product quality and compliance with manufacturing practices.
• Follow and maintain clear, detail-oriented documentation for all assembly, test, and material handling activities in accordance with good documentation practices.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and written assembly and test procedures to perform builds, troubleshooting, and testing.
• Use measurement tools, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other test equipment to troubleshoot electro-mechanical assemblies and resolve issues.
• Identify, communicate, and document issues or problems that may impact product quality, production timelines, or test data accuracy.
• Work with engineers to conduct experiments and support product development activities, including test design, calibration, and instrumentation tasks.
• Assist managers and engineers in developing, refining, and improving manufacturing operations, processes, and documentation.
• Apply proper ESD handling techniques and follow ESD standards and industrial practices when working with sensitive electronic components.
• Perform soldering, PCB-related tasks, and basic electronics troubleshooting as needed for assembly and test activities.
• Use common manual and powered hand tools and apply proper mechanical torque specifications and assembly techniques.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a flexible manufacturing environment with changing projects, roles, and priorities.
• Handle and work with materials such as aluminum, steel, and various plastics during assembly and test processes.
• Follow applicable ISO/FDA (GMP) procedures and guidelines when working in regulated environments, as required by specific projects.
• Support lab-related activities such as pipetting, dispensing chemicals, and handling reagents when needed for instrumentation and testing tasks.
• Adapt to varying departmental requirements, performing additional related duties as assigned based on operational needs.

• Demonstrated proficiency with electro-mechanical subassemblies, including troubleshooting and problem-solving in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and/or electrical schematics for assembly and troubleshooting.
• Proficient use of measurement tools and digital multimeters for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes.
• Ability to read and interpret written assembly and test procedures accurately.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey issues, results, and documentation.
• Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with engineers, managers, and production team members.
• Skilled use of common manual and powered hand tools and application of standard assembly techniques.
• Understanding of mechanical torque specifications and adherence to good workmanship and manufacturing practices.
• Clear, detail-oriented documentation skills, including accurate recording of test results, build steps, and issues.
• Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Working knowledge of ESD standards, requirements, and industrial practices.
• Experience working with materials such as aluminum, steel, and various plastics in an assembly environment.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
• Ability to multi-task and remain productive in a flexible manufacturing environment with changing priorities.
• 5+ years of experience in electronics, mechanical disciplines, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least 2 years of work experience in an electro-mechanical manufacturing environment.
• Experience with electro-mechanical devices, lab equipment, and/or medical devices.

• Experience working in a regulated ISO/FDA (GMP) environment is preferred.
• Background in laboratory skills such as pipetting, dispensing chemicals, and handling reagents is preferred.
• Experience with soldering and PCB-related work.
• Experience with test design and calibration of electro-mechanical systems.
• Familiarity with oscilloscopes and other electronic test equipment.
• Experience with electronics and electro-mechanical systems in a production or lab setting.
• Ability to read blueprints and perform accurate blueprint interpretation.
• Comfort working with both mechanical and electronic components in integrated systems.

Work Environment

This role is based in a production environment with significant bench work, where you will test units and perform instrumentation duties on electro-mechanical devices. You will regularly use lab equipment, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, measurement tools, and common manual and powered hand tools. Work is performed in a structured setting that follows ESD standards and, for certain projects, ISO/FDA (GMP) procedures. The standard schedule runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The environment supports a flexible manufacturing setup with changing projects and priorities, requiring adaptability and a focus on quality and safety.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Rockville, MD.

The pay range for this position is $26.44 - $28.85/hr.
