Position: Program Assistant (Youth Programs) Location: Crenshaw Family YMCA - Los Angeles, CA 90008 Employment Type: Part Time (up to 29 hours) Salary: $17.87 per hour Shift: Any Position Summary This position supports the YMCA’s mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Program Assistant creates a positive, nurturing environment for children, builds relationships with parents, staff, and partners, and facilitates peer-to-peer connections that promote achievement and belonging. Essential Functions Nurture children through purposeful programming that builds achievement and belonging. Maintain close visual supervision of assigned children, following program ratios. Ensure no child is left unsupervised and staff never remains alone with a child. Help children manage behavior with a positive approach, using proactive strategies, redirection, natural, and logical consequences. Support the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Plan and implement classes focused on specific topics and skill mastery, culminating in an exposition or showcase. Adhere to program standards for safety, cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and accurate record keeping. Build positive relationships and communicate effectively with parents, engaging them as volunteers and connecting them to the YMCA. Attend family events, program activities, staff meetings, and trainings. Follow YMCA policies on medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, emergencies, and reporting procedures. Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and YMCA procedures. Maintain positive relationships with parents, YMCA staff, and community partners, modeling relationship‑building skills such as “Listen First.” Attend additional meetings and trainings as required. Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character and YMCA Core Values in all interactions. Show competency in Cause‑Driven Leadership areas such as mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness, and personal growth. Perform all other duties assigned by the supervisor. High school diploma or equivalent; school‑issued work permit required for employees under 18. Previous experience working with school‑age children in a group setting (preferred). Ability to assist in planning, organizing, and implementing age‑appropriate program activities (arts & humanities, sports skills, etc.). Experience with diverse populations preferred; ability to build authentic relationships across backgrounds. Completed semester units in child development, human services, or related fields (preferred). Strong character values: respect, responsibility, honesty, caring. Strong communication skills and emotional maturity. Current approvals for First Aid, Child CPR, Adult CPR, and Infant CPR. Completion of child abuse prevention training prior to the first day in program. Work Environment & Minimum Physical Requirements Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform essential functions; accommodations available.
