Phlebotomist I (Float)

This Phlebotomist I float role supports multiple high-volume patient service centers by performing blood draws and specimen collections, processing and preparing samples for testing, and delivering excellent patient care. You assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvements while ensuring all specimens are collected, labeled, stored, and transported according to established procedures and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and capillary blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced patient service center environment.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that patient information and test orders are accurate and complete.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
• Package specimens for transport and follow specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity, including proper temperature control and container selection.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.
• Update and maintain patient information and specimen data accurately using data entry systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory result information as permitted, responding to inquiries in a professional and helpful manner.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards during specimen collection, handling, and processing.
• Attend and complete annual department trainings and any required ongoing education related to phlebotomy, safety, and specimen processing.
• Provide a high level of customer service to patients, including pediatric, neonatal, geriatric, and adult populations, in a high-volume setting.
• Float between designated patient service centers as scheduled, adapting to different teams, workflows, and patient volumes.
• Contribute to workflow improvements by identifying issues, assisting with troubleshooting, and making recommendations to enhance efficiency and patient experience.
• Participate in onsite training for one week at the start of the role and complete additional offsite specimen processing training as scheduled.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (CPT) as required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in performing high-volume blood draws, including pediatric, neonatal, geriatric, and adult patients.
• Experience with specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and basic data entry for updating patient information and recording specimen data.
• High School Diploma or GED with 02 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and healthcare staff.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety protocols.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (BLS-AHA).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in large-volume patient service centers with high daily patient counts.
• Comfort working in environments where draw times average one patient every six minutes.
• Ability to handle multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, while maintaining strict quality and safety standards.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in labeling, requisition verification, and specimen handling.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in different site settings.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training, including offsite specimen processing training scheduled after initial onboarding.
• Flexibility to float between multiple locations and adapt quickly to different site procedures and volumes.

Work Environment

This role is based in patient service centers (PSCs) and functions as a float position supporting multiple sites in high-volume locations. You work primarily on your feet for most of the day, with standing required during blood draws and specimen collection, and brief seated periods while checking in patients or completing administrative tasks. Sites handle large patient volumes, with some locations serving over 200 patients per day and others around 100 patients per day. You provide services to a broad patient population, including pediatric, neonatal, geriatric, and adult patients. The position requires availability between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.; schedules consist of 8-hour shifts within this window, and you receive your site assignment and shift times approximately one week in advance. You initially complete one week of onsite training, followed by additional offsite training focused on specimen processing at a later time. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with varying team sizes at different locations. Standard clinical attire appropriate for a patient service center and adherence to all safety and infection control protocols are expected.

Pay and Benefits
