Recreation Specialist III – Starting Salary: $20.89 per Hour The City of El Cajon is currently searching for enthusiastic individuals to join our Parks & Recreation Department. This part‑time temporary position requires a team player who enjoys leading activities, games, sports, arts and crafts, and special events for youth and the community. Position Summary As a Recreation Specialist III (Lead Operations Director), you will perform a full range of duties independently, exercising judgment and initiative. You will receive guidance from the Recreation Supervisor, adjust to new or unusual situations, and apply operating procedures and policies. Independent judgment is required to identify and apply appropriate guidelines and precedents, and to adopt standard methods or practices when conditions vary. You will lead a staff and oversee day‑to‑day operations and prior related experience is required. Typical Duties Direct and supervise participants of recreation programs. Maintain records pertinent to programs. Direct staff on daily responsibilities. Implement age‑appropriate activities and events. Ensure the health, welfare, and safety of program participants. Work closely with the Recreation Supervisor and other Specialists to ensure program success through preparation, execution, and evaluation. Process registration for recreation programs. Assist staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment. Establish and maintain relationships with parents, community center staff, and other key individuals. Maintain a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants. Perform other duties as assigned. Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to center patrons. Support to ensure health and well‑being of all participants and staff. Ability to take direction and initiative. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Basic computer skills. Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively. Flexible work schedule may require morning and evening hours, weekends, and holidays. Education & Experience Education: Completion of high school; college‑level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field desired. Experience: One year (or equivalent training) performing duties comparable to a Recreation Specialist II and/or experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults. Special Requirements Must be able to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate; may be required for use of personal vehicle and a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record. Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs. Benefits This position does not receive benefits other than participation in the appropriate retirement plan: Nationwide or CalPERS. El Cajon is not a member of the Social Security System, but 1.45% of salary must be contributed to Medicare. The City contributes 7.5% of employee salary to the Nationwide retirement plan in lieu of social security.
