Phlebotomist Position Description

Qualifications

  • Must possess a current phlebotomy certification by the state of California
    • Proof of certification is required prior to in-processing and at each renewal
    • Continuing education requirements must be maintained and documented annually
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in phlebotomy skills necessary to meet Government requirements
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently
  • Must comply with VA Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations governing staff conduct
Position Overview

The Phlebotomist provides onsite medical laboratory support services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the Fresno VA Medical Center, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service.

Standards of Care
  • Provide care supporting both routine and STAT testing
  • Perform specimen collection and handling for:
    • Blood
    • Urine
    • Other body fluids
  • Support laboratory functions including:
    • Clinical chemistry
    • Histology
    • Toxicology
    • Immunology
    • Coagulation
    • Hematology
    • Urinalysis
    • Microbiology
Scope of Duties
  • Collect, transport, process, and evaluate specimens for testing
  • Ensure proper specimen handling, including:
    • Receiving and accessioning specimens
    • Delivering specimens to appropriate lab sections
    • Storing specimens in accordance with protocol
  • Perform both routine and STAT specimen collection procedures within scope of practice
Patient Safety and Compliance
  • Adhere to all patient safety and infection control standards
  • Take all necessary precautions to prevent:
    • Patient falls
    • Injury due to error or omission
  • Immediately report all patient safety incidents using VA-approved reporting systems
  • Submit incident reports and provide documentation to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR)
  • Participate in follow-up actions as required by VA policy
  • Maintain compliance with CDC and VA infection control guidelines
