Duke University Health System seeks to hire an inpatient-focused Genetic Counselor/Certified Genetic Counselor who will embrace our mission of "Advancing Health Together" as part of our multi-disciplinary Pediatric Medical Genetics team.


The Inpatient CGC role supports admitted patients referred to medical genetics for evaluation/consultation. This role not only provides face to face genetic counseling for new consults, return patients, results disclosure and test coordination but also functions as a liaison to Duke University Health staff to provide education regarding patient care focused on genetic etiologies and testing methods.

Ideal candidates will be compassionate, with great communication and teamwork skills. Flexibility and the capacity to adapt to varying patient scenarios are crucial to this role.

Work Schedule:

Full-time: Hours may vary but will typically fall within a standard Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. schedule. All direct patient care will be provided in person and on-site within Duke University Hospital.

What you will do:

As an Inpatient Genetic Counselor (IGC) in the Duke University Health System, you will plan and provide professional care for patients in accordance with the Genetic Counseling job description (Job 5046). The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Coordination with Attending/Fellow plan for genetic consults (with the exception of patients with known metabolic diagnoses being admitted for ongoing or acute management)
• Speaking with all newly consulted patients/families to obtain family history and review the genetics background
• Consenting patients and appropriate family members to genetic testing, as indicated
• Coordination of test ordering and sample collection, discerning the best options for genetic test send-outs
• Maintaining the Maestro "Active inpatient consult" list and GC "Rounding list current" Excel list with all appropriate information
• Obtaining relevant genetic results and medical records for clinical review
• Attending daily inpatient genetics rounds with Attending, Resident, and fellow. (Note: timing of rounds may prevent IGC attendance if performed after 6 pm).
• Discussing genetic testing results with the inpatient genetics team, researching disorders, and gathering information
• Disclosing results to patient/family members with/without Attending, including diagnostic phenotype, inheritance, follow-up plan, parental testing recommendations, and resources, with consent of Attending
• Attending family/provider meetings for genetic conditions and case management discussions
• Coordinating and navigating an appropriate outpatient follow-up plan with staff assistants
• Providing in-services, consults to allied health professionals caring for patients in common
• Attending staff meetings on inpatient units and attending rounds, as requested
• Serving as Supervisor for all Genetic Counseling students (and other trainees) rotating through Medical Genetics
• Attending and participating in the weekly Medical Genetics case conference
• Joining a team of CGC's (4 outpatient-focused) that deliver high standards of care and provide coverage for each other when and where possible

What you can expect:

Multitask in myriad ways - document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status, independently seek out resources and work collaboratively. Educate patients and families in accordance with the Genetic Counselor competencies. Relationship management with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited program

Passion for genetics in all pediatric specialties. Experience preferred but not necessary.

New graduates will be considered

Experience

Board Certification or eligible by the American Board Of Genetic Counselors (ABGC).

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Board Certification or eligible by the American Board Of Genetic Counselors (ABGC).

American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified or have Active Candidate Status (ACS) from ABGC to sit for upcoming certification exams
