Police Officer

The City of Janesville, Wisconsin, invites applications for the position of Police Officer. This is a full-time position with a salary of $50,255.90 annually. The Police Department is located at 100 North Jackson Street, Janesville, WI.

This position involves the enforcement of law and maintenance of order, protection of life and property, and prevention of crime. The role is physically and psychologically demanding, requiring the ability to uphold the law, conduct routine patrols, make arrests, respond to calls for service, and perform related duties.

Qualified applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Minimum age of 18 years.
2. High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum 40 college semester credits at time of hire (60 college semester credits for lateral transfer candidates at time of application) or Associate Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or related field or general studies from an accredited college or university.
3. Meet the requirements of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board.
4. A valid, state-issued driver's license at time of hire.
5. Must pass medical examination meeting minimum physical, hearing, and eyesight requirements.
6. A United States citizen and have no felony criminal record.
7. Must pass written and psychological examinations.
8. Must pass background investigation.

Skills and abilities required include excellent written and verbal communication, effective record-keeping, interpersonal and customer service skills, strong ethics, and the ability to learn and apply modern police practices, crime reporting, criminal investigation procedures, and federal, state, and local laws.

The position requires proficiency in the use of firearms, operation of motor vehicles, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. The employee must be able to work in various conditions, including extreme weather, and perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, chasing suspects, and providing first aid.
