Controls Designer

Job Scope Generally responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of designers when functioning as a lead designer. The role involves delivering electrical and instrumentation deliverables on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations with minimal supervision. Key Responsibilities Familiarize with and apply department design and drafting standards. Understand project scope, specifications and design criteria. Recognize and promptly communicate scope and design changes. Assist on‑site during startup. Produce estimate‑level preliminary designs and material take‑offs. Develop detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction. Prepare design documentation with emphasis on ease of construction and client satisfaction. Check calculations and deliverables for accuracy, code conformance, and good engineering practice. Assist drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing issues. Provide sufficient sketches and details for engineering drawings. Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to maintain flow of critical information. Advise senior engineer on identified design or scope changes. Help assemble scopes, drawings and specifications into a complete package for procurement. Review vendor and disciplinary drawings for electrical/instrumentation input. Develop construction specifications. Review fabrication drawings and submittals for conformance with engineering drawings. Perform fieldwork to gather data, check tie‑ins and provide construction support. Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel. Produce installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts and grounding, lighting, power and instrumentation plans. Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine efficient design solutions. Create small work sharing packages for interoffice execution support. Education & Certification Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer‑Aided Drafting preferred. Certification is not required at this level. Experience Requires 5 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment. Ability to perform lighting level calculations, voltage drop calculations, and conduit/cable tray routing. Skill in sizing wire, conduit, overcurrent protection, and motor control center loading. Capability to calculate tray and conduit fill. Experience in creating accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings. Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and size control valves using appropriate software. Experience developing specifications, data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, actuated valves, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, and load center unit substations. Knowledge of standards for instrumentation and controls (ISA). Understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for producing all electrical deliverables. Capability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man‑hour budgets for small or large projects. Ability to determine construction material quantities. Proficiency in company engineering design and CAD drafting standards. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Virtual team collaboration and cross‑divisional relationship skills for interoffice execution support with general supervision. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
