Definition : The Director of Nursing oversees and is administratively responsible for the planning, coordination, and direction of operations for patient care services in the long-term care facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics : This is a professional, administrative level position within the long-term care department. The Director of Nursing will be responsible for supervision of all LTC personnel. The Director of Nursing will report to the Chief Nursing Officer.

Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

1. Provide direct administration of long-term care services with consultation on issues by the Chief Nursing Officer when necessary to ensure delivery of high-quality healthcare.

2. Develop departmental budget that is both realistic and achievable with guidance from the Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Financial Officer and monitor departmental budgetary performance.

3. Provide organizational leadership as a member of the management team through strategic management, community partnership, and contribution to Pershing General Hospital.

4. Manage completion of MDS data entry by established deadlines through oversight of MDS Coordinator.

5. Oversight and completion of care plans to include regular meetings with interdisciplinary team (IDT) directly involved in the care plan process to ensure patients are receiving quality care in accordance with their care plan.

6. Perform patient rounds to ensure high-quality care is provided in accordance with care plans and notate changes in patient health as appropriate.

7. Oversee and ensure with appropriate monitoring techniques that all regulatory requirements within scope of responsibility are met in an effective manner, including state and federal regulatory requirements.

8. Develop and oversee effective employee relations programs/strategies to ensure department employees within scope of responsibility have input into operations and provides atmosphere of learning and development.

9. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and may be required to work the floor as a Registered Nurse when needed or required.

10. Participate in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.

Qualifications for Employment:

Qualifications for employment include the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a job, which are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.

Knowledge of:

o Requirements from agencies such as CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).

o Strong understanding of nursing practices, patient care, and healthcare protocols in LTC setting.

o Geriatric care, including common health issues and conditions affecting the elderly.

o Quality improvement methodologies to enhance patient care and satisfaction.

Skill to :

o Maintain thorough and accurate record-keeping to ensure legal compliance.

o Analyze data for continuous improvement related to quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) projects.

o Effectively inspire and motivate a diverse team of healthcare professionals.

o Develop and implement strategic plans to improve the quality of patient care and facility operations.

Ability to:

o Establish rapport and build trust with patients and their families, as well as work collaboratively with colleagues.

o Adapt to changing patient conditions, department/hospital priorities, and occasional unpredictable work environment.

o Manage personal stress and maintain composure in high-pressure situations.

o Communicate effectively with residents and their families, as well as facility staff.

o Maintain the confidentiality of all patient care information and employee-related matters.

o Make ethical decisions in patient care, personnel management, and facility operations.

o Coordinate/participate in regulatory surveys and develops corrective action plans as needed.

o Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary departments, and community agencies.

o Participates in Board of Trustee Meetings, Medical Executive Committee and Quality Committee activities.

o Supports emergency preparedness and disaster response planning.

o Conducts performance evaluations and provides coaching and professional development.

Promote succession planning.

Required Certifications and Licenses :

Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification required

Active and unencumbered state of Nevada nursing license required

Experience and Training :

Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is:

• Successful completion of a bachelor’s level nursing program is strongly preferred.
• Three to five years of nursing experience with two years of progressive management experience in a long-term care facility setting preferred.

Strength, dexterity, cognitive ability, and coordination to operate a keyboard and video display terminal using word processing and databases. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Dexterity, coordination, bending and reaching to access and handle file(s); periodic lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, and other materials. Moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) may be periodically required to include some bending, reaching, squatting, and stooping. The ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively, and exchange information accurately with all internal and external customers. Mental stamina to deal with emotionally difficult situations. Ability to appropriately handle stress and interact with others, including supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, clients, and customers. Regular and consistent punctuality and attendance.
