Solid Waste Technician I and II

Solid Waste Technician The Public Works Department’s Solid Waste Division is seeking a customer service oriented Solid Waste Technician for a full‑time position in Port Townsend. The role requires strong customer service skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work in an active outdoor environment around heavy equipment. Responsibilities Process customer transactions and collect fees. Inspect incoming waste for prohibited materials. Direct traffic during unloading and operate a forklift and other equipment. Operate the scale house and maintain clean, organized facilities. Qualifications Valid Washington State driver’s license. Basic computer and math skills. Ability to obtain required certifications and training within six months of hire. Strong customer service skills and good judgment. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or GED. Demonstrated experience in traffic control, manual labor, construction, customer service, or cash handling. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience plus a valid WA State driver’s license. Compensation Solid Waste Technician I : Teamsters Grade A4‑A, starting pay $23.70 per hour, full pay range $23.70 – $29.21. Solid Waste Technician II : Teamsters Grade A4‑B, starting pay $26.13 per hour, full pay range $26.13 – $32.16. Benefits Full medical benefits, including dental and vision; retirement through Washington State DRS; 11 paid holidays, PTO, and bereavement leave. Weekend hours may be required. Workweek Facility operated Monday‑Saturday; flexible scheduling may be provided depending on operational needs.
