This position provides professional-level medical services at the South Dakota Developmental Center that require the application of Medical Assistant practices, and techniques following established healthcare procedures and standards. Employees in this role usually operate in a patient care environment where the focus is on the healthcare of individuals. This position provides professional-level clinical support services at the South Dakota Developmental Center, delivering compassionate, person-centered care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This position applies to established medical assisting principles, practices, and techniques while working under the direction of licensed healthcare professionals to promote the health, safety, and well-being of individuals. Responsibilities include performing clinical procedures, obtaining and documenting vital signs and health information, assisting with examinations and treatments, administering medications and treatments as authorized, collecting laboratory specimens, maintaining accurate medical records, coordinating appointments, and supporting preventive healthcare services. The CMA collaborates with an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, medication tech/ aides, pharmacy, nurses, therapists, and direct care staff to ensure high-quality, individualized care. This role requires excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills, along with the ability to provide compassionate care while maintaining patient confidentiality and complying with healthcare regulations, infection prevention standards, and facility policies. Commitment to person-centered care, safety, and quality outcome Licenses and Certifications: Must be certified as a Medical Assistant or eligible to obtain certification as a Medical Assistant. Any certifications and/or required training necessary to perform the duties of this position must be obtained and maintained as required. Must be licensed as a Medication Aide in the State of South Dakota or eligible to obtain licensure. Individuals who are not currently licensed may complete the required Medication Aide training and obtain licensure after hire through the South Dakota Developmental Center. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: both clinical competencies and the ability to provide compassionate care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Knowledge of: medical assisting principles, practices, and procedures. clinical patient care techniques, including obtaining vital signs and collecting specimens. medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. infection prevention and control practices. medication administration principles (within scope of practice). electronic Health Records (EHR) and medical documentation standards. HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements. basic laboratory procedures and specimen handling. first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures. safety practices and standards applicable to healthcare settings. Skills to: providing compassionate, patient-centered care. accurately measuring and recording vital signs. assisting healthcare providers with examinations and treatments. maintaining complete and accurate medical records. communicating effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. time management and prioritizing multiple responsibilities. using electronic health record systems and standard office equipment. observing and reporting changes in patient condition. following written and verbal instructions while maintaining attention to detail.
