Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: Laboratory experience with viruses, traditional microbiology, molecular skills; previous experience in virology laboratory; BSL-2 level work. Familiarity with UGA procurement and safety procedures desirable. Position Summary The technical and professional responsibilities include all aspects of virologic, serologic, and molecular-based diagnostics supporting both diagnostic investigation and research related to zoonotic diseases. This includes maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies to ensure safety requirements are met, precise record keeping, and regular written and telephone communications of activities. Assistance in planning and selection of diagnostic approaches for research projects, and supervision and training of undergraduate and summer students in the lab. Responsibilities Analyze research samples using cell culture and molecular techniques. Provide diagnostic support for surveillance efforts related to zoonotic diseases. Assist with supervision, directing workflow, and training of undergraduate and summer students. Maintain safety standards (chemical and biosafety), laboratory work areas, equipment, records, data entry, and preparation of summary reports. Manage specimen inventory, ship reagents to other laboratories, coordinate biosafety and chemical inventory inspections, and organize and order supplies needed for laboratory work. Report test results to various State and County Public Health Officials. Physical Demands Moderate, some light lifting. Must be capable of manual, repetitive tasks.
