About the Position

Strategic Capacity Group (SCG) is seeking an experienced finance leader to serve as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This is an excellent opportunity for a Controller, Director of Finance, or Deputy CFO who is ready to step into a first CFO role and grow with the organization or for a seasoned finance leader who would enjoy a smaller, mission-driven organization where their experience and judgement can make a direct contribution.

Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the Executive Team, the CFO leads SCG’s financial strategy, planning, budgeting, financial reporting, cash management, banking, and compliance with federal award requirements. The CFO supervises SCG’s in-house finance and accounting staff, directs the work of an outsourced accounting/Controller firm, and serves as the primary liaison with the external auditors for the annual audit required under 2 CFR 200 Subpart F. The CFO oversees the financial management of SCG’s federal awards from setup through closeout, manages the organization’s indirect cost rate and cost allocation methodology, maintains a strong system of internal controls, and presents financial results and recommendations to the President and the SCG Board of Directors. The CFO works closely with the Programs Department, the Director of Operations/Chief of Staff, and the Executive Team to ensure SCG’s financial systems support its programs worldwide and comply with 2 CFR 200 and other U.S. Government regulations.

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Ideal candidates will have:

• A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, and at least 10 years of progressive finance experience, including at least three years in a senior role such as Controller, Director of Finance, or Deputy CFO with responsibility for supervising staff or outsourced accounting providers. Prior CFO experience is not required.
• A CPA, CMA, or CGMA certification is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing federal grants, cooperative agreements, or contracts, including working knowledge of 2 CFR 200 and experience negotiating indirect cost rates with a cognizant federal agency.
• Strong analytical, budgeting, and forecasting skills, with knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for nonprofits. Knowledge of Sage Intacct is preferred.
• Experience preparing for and managing annual audits and working directly with external auditors.
• Experience with international transactions and overseas banking relationships is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to build and improve financial systems, internal controls, and processes.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly to senior leadership, a board of directors, and program staff.
• Proven resourcefulness in setting priorities, keen attention to organizational and compliance deadlines, and sound judgment about when to seek guidance.

Salary: $155,000-185,000, commensurate with experience.

Work Location : Hybrid (McLean, VA headquarters and remote)
