Substitute School Nurse

School NurseWith supervision and guidance from the District's Executive Director of Student Services and building administration, the Pre-K through 12 school nurse will protect the health status of students by identifying and assisting in the removal or modification of health-related barriers which impede the learning process. Also, focus will be on the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Promotes and protect the optimal health status of studentsProvides health assessmentsObtain a health and development historyScreen and evaluate findings of deficits in vision, hearing, etc.Observe the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosisImplements a health planInterpret the health status of students to parents and school personnelInitiate referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow throughProvide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agenciesRecommend and help to implement modifications of school programs to meet students' health needsUtilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care for studentsMaintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of studentsParticipates as the health specialist on a student's education evaluation team to develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and CARE team plans where neededPlans and implements school health management protocols for students, including the administration of medicationDevelops procedures and provides for crises intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbancesPromotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseasesProvides health educationTeach parenting skills as they relate to the development and health needs of studentsProvide direct health education and health counseling to students and families who are making decisions on health and lifestyle issuesParticipate in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health. Counsel with adolescents concerning problems such as teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and drug abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-makingCoordinates school and community health activities and serve as a liaison person between the home, school and communityActs as a resource person in promoting health careersEngages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practicesFacilitates and monitors the Medicaid Logging at the building levelPerforms other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Services and building administrationPerformance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge, skills, and ability to operate computer programs and related technology for District employeesKnowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing, and other appropriate health screening activitiesKnowledge of and experience with principles and theories of adult learning for effective staff development and in-service activitiesKnowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practicesAbility to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settingsEffective written and oral communication skillsAbility to organize, maintain and report data and information related to health servicesAbility to use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of programs, the coordination of committees, and to maintain productive relationships with colleagues, school personnel, parents, community resources, other health professionals, and studentsKnowledge of Board policies and proceduresKnowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel, and schools necessary for the efficient and effective processing of communications, requesting of needed information, and implementation of the school nursing programsPhysical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environmentAbility to travel between the schools throughout the school districtEssential Qualifications:Registered Nurse (RN)Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university (BSN) REQUIREDMinimum of two years' nursing experience in one or more areas, including community or public health, pediatrics, emergency room and individuals with disabilitiesPrevious nursing experience in an urban environmentAbility to foster positive rapport with administration, staff, students and parentsAbility to diffuse and resolve conflictPhysical Demands:Sufficient vision to read printed material, see distant objects with clarity, and identify and distinguish objectsSufficient hearing to hear conversations in person and on the telephone, and hear sounds clearly up to 30 feetAbility to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation and on the telephone, and in addressing groupsAbility to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objectsThis position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching for extended periods of timeSufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment and move about the work areaThis position will subject the employee to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, high noise levels, and various work-related hazards
