Metering Technician/Senior Metering Technician

Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) field devices installation, removal, testing, calibration, repair and maintenance. Responsibilities Closes metering work orders and service orders. Installs, calibrates, troubleshoots and replaces Electric End Point’s, Water End Point’s, and AMI Communications systems, and associated infrastructure. Installs, tests and maintains all Instrument Rated Revenue Metering. Develops, tests and installs Water and Electric Meter Programming. Investigates metering and remote terminal unit (RTU) irregularities; performs minor adjustments, repairs, calibrations or servicing tasks. Performs preventative maintenance on AMI field network devices. Performs disconnect non‑payment (DNP) service orders and customer‑initiated utility service connects and disconnects. Assists internal business customers and external utility customers on utility metering issues. Uses instrument grade calibrators and laptop/mobile computers to make inquiries, activate and test programs for all AMI/AMR End Point’s, AMI Transmitting and Receiving devices and Electric Metering Equipment. Operates power metering test equipment to locate the cause of defective performance. Co‑ordinates the repair process with contractors, manufacturers or in‑house technicians. Works under guidance and direction of the Senior Metering Technician when completing complex tasks. Provides guidance to Meter Technician Trainees. Performs other tasks as required. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of full‑time related industry experience performing work consistent with this classification; or any combination of experience, training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certification from a vocational training program or an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in electrical or electronic technology may substitute for the one (1) year experience requirement. Senior Metering Technician (Required) Comprehensive background in Electric and Water utility metering and AMR systems. Education or equivalent training typical of completion of high school or equivalent (GED) and certification or vocational training program, plus three (3) to five (5) years of directly related industrial experience. Knowledge of medium distribution voltages (12.5, 24.9, 480, 120/208VAC); electrical and water systems, logic circuits, meter programming, computer systems, and safety. Knowledge of utility metering and AMI systems, AMR systems, Intelligent Device Communications protocols (Modbus, DNP, ICCP); Boolean logic; NESC or NEC standards; testing methods, procedures, tools and equipment for electrical metering devices. Skill in operating utility‑grade equipment safely; interpreting technical manuals, system schematics, blueprints; performing electrical calculations for kWh demand and metered energy consumption; communicating effectively; using various types of test equipment to test and calibrate electric and electronic meters. Licenses and Certification Requirements Valid Class “C” Texas driver’s license required. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide a valid license and a three‑year driving history. Physical Demands and Working Environment Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls; temperature extremes from weather and engines; live electric lines; pressurized water lines; occasional dogs and insects; high voltage substations; work on elevated platforms. Hiring Range Metering Technician: $23.44 – 29.36 per hour depending on qualifications. Senior Metering Technician: $27.13 – 33.98 per hour depending on qualifications.
