Description of Job


This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Housekeeping Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Trinidad Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of the facility and supervising and training inmate work crews. Position promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security -position maintains safety and security of facility and work areas; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches; monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.

Position may be required to work additional hours or shifts to maintain safety and security.
Supervision - position maintains safety and security by providing supervisory duties for assigned inmate crew; promotes a high level of performance and security by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs inmates in housekeeping operations in compliance with agency policy and regulation to include the proper use of all equipment, sanitation standards and cleaning supplies; ensures adherence to established housekeeping and sanitation procedures in order to prevent injury and infection and stresses proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule, assigns tasks and inspects work; performs inmate evaluations and reduces inmate idleness, creating real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.

Operations - position utilizes comprehensive knowledge of housekeeping and sanitation procedures to ensure the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands on" instructional work alongside inmate crew. Position is responsible for facility housekeeping and sanitation, ensuring work is completed according to Housekeeping Administrative Regulation.
Position ensures adherence to the facility written housekeeping plan for all areas of the facility, follows established cleaning schedule for daily tasks, as well as deep cleaning and sanitizing; dispenses cleaning supplies and equipment per regulations. Position is responsible for ensuring thorough cleaning, utilizing safe and established techniques for showers, bathrooms, carpets, hard floors and any other assigned surface cleaning.
With prior purchase approval and in accordance with fiscal rules and policies, position maintains cleaning supply inventory and ensures correct use, tracking and storage of supplies; reviews Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals, keeping MSDS books current. Trains others in the proper use of chemicals and protective equipment.
Conducts regular inspections of physical plant ensuring compliance with Hazard Communications Standard and any other applicable regulations. Reports maintenance and/or unsafe conditions to the area supervisor, the Life Safety Officer and/or the Physical Plant Manager.

Position coordinates logistical support with other trades and shops in order to use resources efficiently; monitors progress and quality of work; completes required documentation such as work orders and incident reports; provides assistance as necessary in other areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education : High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Four (4) yearsof employment experience in commercial/institutional housekeeping, janitorial and/or custodial work. Experience must include floor cleaning, surface cleaning, deep cleaning, carpet cleaning, and comprehensive knowledge of associated cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment. (Part-time experience will be prorated).

OR

Applicant may meet the four year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:

A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience for a total of four (4) years.
** Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior, and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry.

OR
Substitutions: Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.Formal education in a related subject, from a non correspondence school which provided the same type of knowledge and experience as the required work experience may substitute for the minimum qualification on a year for year basis (if using education as a substitution, you must attach a copy of your transcripts showing degree and date awarded).

    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down
    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows.
    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows
    • Swing a baton in a striking technique
    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic
    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetition
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner.
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders.
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments.
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
  • Willing and able to travel
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule.
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant's background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
