What You Need to Apply

License and Certification Qualifications : Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Law Enforcement certification, pass a criminal history, psychological, and polygraph test, and valid Georgia driver's license required.

Education Qualifications : Associates degree in related field required or obtain an Associates Degree within three years of hire date.

Experience Qualifications : Five years of law enforcement experience required.

Skills Qualifications: Ability to communicate with others in an effective and tactful manner; ability to listen and respond to other's needs; ability to work in a school environment with young people, educators, and citizens; and ability to teach courses related to drugs, law enforcement, citizenship, criminal justice, safety, crime prevention, and law.

Primary Responsibilities : Responsible for assisting a school cluster consisting of several individual locations, assisting the school administration and staff in providing a safe and secure environment for students by proactively planning to prevent safety and security problems and by responding immediately to deal with any disruption or criminal activity, and instilling in students respect and understanding of the law through education and example.

1. Assist the local school administration by providing a safe and secure environment for students.
a. Provide local school administrators and personnel with the resources to operate a safe and secure school.
b. Provide in-service training to help administrators be better prepared to deal with security related matters.

2. Act as the liaison/facilitator between the school and local law enforcement agencies.
a. Coordinate the law enforcement efforts of the local jurisdiction relative to schools.
b. Work within a school cluster.
c. Develop a communication network between administration, staff, students, parents, and citizens.
d. Be a positive role model with the intent that the positive experiences students have will bridge the gap between students and law enforcement to prevent crime.

3. Maintain knowledge of procedures for dealing with public agencies that come into the schools to deliver subpoenas, interview students and/or teachers, and arrest individuals.

4. Reduce juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relationships between youth and law enforcement.

5. Take law enforcement action as necessary to protect against unwanted intruders.

6. Assist, in a proactive way, the administration in developing plans for a safe school environment for staff and students.
a. Facilitate the completion of safety and security assessments and plan for improvement as well as emergency plans.

7. Plan and help conduct emergency drills on a routine basis.
a. Be able to set and reset fire alarms whether there is a drill or a real emergency.

8. Advise as to what law enforcement measures are appropriate when an incident is perceived as a violation of the law.

9. Be available for conferences and consultations with students, parents, and staff members to assist with problems of a law enforcement or crime prevention nature.
a. Make referrals available to other agencies within the school system and the community for additional assistance.

10. Create and maintain written case files of criminal acts by students and report of deprived, abused, or neglected children.
a. Share information with the administrator, school social worker, agencies in the law enforcement and judiciary systems, and the Department of Family and Child Services (DFACS) when appropriate.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time; climb stairs; run, sit, climb and/or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The ability to listen more closely and acutely than normal daily life to accurately perceive information is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to discern colors and work in a night setting. The employee must maintain appropriate physical standards including agility, physical strength, and stamina in order to respond to emergency situations, restrain and apprehend suspects, lift, and push or pull individuals or objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
