The Role:

The Direct Support Professional is responsible for teaching daily living and social skills to individuals residing in the Chapel Haven Residential Program. The Direct Support Professional plays a key role in coordinating and delivering the social communicative competence curriculum, helping individuals build essential life skills for greater independence. This position fosters an environment where residents can develop the skills needed for a more independent and fulfilling life.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Teach good nutrition habits, meal planning, food storage, meal preparation, and proper use of kitchen equipment (e.g., stove, microwave, George Foreman grill).
• Instruct individuals in apartment maintenance skills, including keeping a clean and organized living space, using cleaning products properly, and following in-home safety practices.
• Teach personal hygiene and grooming skills, such as showering, shaving, hair care, brushing teeth, and scheduling personal care appointments.
• Provide instruction on laundry tasks, including task analysis and use of a laundry checklist.
• Teach problem-solving and relationship-building skills, guiding residents in appropriate social behaviors.
• Complete case notes and checklists daily as directed by a supervisor.
• Administer medication as needed.
• Provide transportation for residents as required, including use of a personal vehicle when necessary.

Minimum Education Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field, or four or more years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Able to obtain State of Connecticut Medication Administration Certification.
• Valid CT driver's license.
• Able to obtain a Public Service License.
• Work independently and as a member of a team.
• Maintain a positive attitude.
• Excellent communication and observation skills.
• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for periods of time.
