Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and handling specimens according to established procedures, and contributing to efficient laboratory workflows. This role involves troubleshooting, assisting with training, and making workflow recommendations while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and venipuncture procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all patient and test information is accurate and complete.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures and protocols to preserve specimen quality.
• Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to maintain the integrity of specimens during handling and transport.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory standards in daily work.
• Attend annual department trainings and stay current with updated procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
• Update patient information accurately in the system to ensure proper documentation and traceability of specimens.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results when needed to satisfy inquiries and support internal and external customers.
• Provide courteous, professional customer service to patients, clinicians, and colleagues throughout all interactions.

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including routine and complex blood draws.
• Strong venipuncture skills using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, process, split, and store specimens according to test requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• Ability to interpret and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions accurately.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in labeling and matching specimens to requisitions.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.
• Effective customer service and communication skills when working with patients, clinicians, and colleagues.

• Experience performing blood draws in pediatric and geriatric populations.
• Background in specimen processing in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
• Comfort working with a variety of blood drawing techniques and equipment, including butterfly needles.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize in a high-volume setting while maintaining accuracy.
• Strong telephone etiquette and ability to communicate laboratory results clearly and professionally.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training and adapt to updated protocols and procedures.

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards. You will work with phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen containers, and computer systems for labeling and documentation. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, requiring professional and courteous communication at all times. Work hours may vary based on facility needs and volume, and you will be expected to attend annual department trainings and comply with all OSHA and DEP regulations. The environment emphasizes accuracy, efficiency, and teamwork to ensure timely and reliable specimen collection and processing.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Bristol, PA.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
