Company Description The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of the City of New York, responsible for creating and overseeing local legislation that shapes the lives of residents across all five boroughs. Role Description The Public Relation Director is a full-time, on-site role based in Brooklyn, NY, responsible for leading strategic communications and public relations efforts for the New York City Council. This role oversees the development and execution of comprehensive PR campaigns, including drafting press releases, managing media relations, and coordinating responses to press inquiries. The Public Relation Director will shape messaging for key initiatives, prepare Council leadership and staff for media interviews, and ensure consistent communication across digital and traditional channels. Day-to-day tasks include monitoring news coverage, advising on communication strategies, collaborating with internal teams on public-facing materials, and organizing press events that clearly convey Council priorities to the public. The role also involves building strong relationships with journalists, community stakeholders, and partner organizations to support effective information sharing and public engagement. Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in Public Relations and Media Relations, including experience managing press inquiries and maintaining relationships with journalists. Strong skills in Press Releases and Strategic Communications, with the ability to craft clear, accurate, and compelling messaging on complex public policy issues. Excellent Communication skills, including outstanding writing, editing, and presentation abilities tailored to diverse audiences. Proven experience leading communications or PR functions in government, nonprofit, or public affairs settings is highly beneficial. Ability to work on-site in Brooklyn, NY, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and respond quickly to emerging issues and media cycles. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field; advanced degree or equivalent experience is a plus. Knowledge of New York City government, local policy issues, and community dynamics is preferred.
