Controls Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support industrial control systems for manufacturing operations. The role focuses on developing reliable, safe, and maintainable PLC, SCADA, and HMI solutions that improve process performance and uptime. You will work cross-functionally with operations, electrical, and mechanical teams to deliver automation projects from concept through startup and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, program, and debug PLC systems to control manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Develop, configure, and maintain SCADA and HMI applications for process monitoring and operator control.
  • Create and review electrical control schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams in accordance with standards.
  • Commission, start up, and validate control systems on-site; perform field troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Work with procurement and vendors to specify and select control components and instruments.
  • Implement control system changes, upgrades, and retrofits while minimizing production disruption.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation: control narratives, I/O lists, PLC code comments, test plans, and SOPs.
  • Ensure automation designs comply with safety standards, electrical codes, and company policies.
  • Support maintenance and operations teams with troubleshooting, spare parts recommendations, and training.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase reliability, efficiency, and maintainability of automated systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience developing and commissioning PLC-based control systems in industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Hands-on experience with SCADA and HMI platforms and application development.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical schematics, control panel design, and industrial wiring practices.
  • Familiarity with common PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens) and programming languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Blocks).
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols and networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC).
  • Practical experience with instrumentation, sensors, motor control, VFDs, and I/O device integration.
  • Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including field diagnostics and root-cause analysis.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and codes applicable to control systems (e.g., IEC, NFPA/70E) and machine safety concepts.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams; willingness to work on-site and travel as required.
