Skills Counselors in LUK’s Residential Services are important members of the team that work with youth placed in LUK’s congregate care programs. Skills Counselors develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with youth while providing constant supervision. Skills Counselors implement recreational and skill building activities with youth in accordance with their individual treatment plan as well as the program model and philosophy.

Skills Counselors are charged with maintaining the safety and well-being of youth, in part by maintaining a calm, trauma-informed therapeutic milieu and by providing a safe, clean, home-like environment. Both staff and residents assist with the daily upkeep of the residence. Skills Counselors implement and actively participate in the activity schedule with the goal of encouraging adaptive behaviors and improved social skills. Skills Counselors assist and teach residents the skills necessary for self-care and activities of daily living. At times, Skills Counselors transport youth to school, medical appointments, and other places.

Many of our residents take prescription medications regularly. It is the responsibility of the Skills Counselor to participate in medication management for youth.

Skills Counselors manage crises that may arise, with the support of the staff team. It is imperative that staff use appropriate language and tone when setting expectations and limits for clients. All staff must maintain appropriate therapeutic and professional boundaries with residents.

Throughout all tasks, timely and accurate documentation is required. Staff must comply with all contractual, licensing, and safety standards and maintain current certifications for CPR/First Aid and CPI – non-violent crisis intervention. Training is provided.

The qualified candidate will preferably have an Associate’s degree in a human service field and 1-5 years of experience in a residential setting. Successful candidates will possess excellent client care and verbal intervention skills. Excellent communication and computer skills are an asset. Valid driver’s license required.

This is a full-time position located in North Central Massachusetts. Work will take place within the residential setting and within the community. Community-based travel is expected. Bilingual/bicultural candidates are encouraged to apply.

Purpose:

Responsibilities Include:

• Maintain the safety and well-being of each resident
• Maintain a calm, trauma informed therapeutic milieu
• Provide a safe, clean, home-like environment by participating with residents and other staff in the daily upkeep of the program
• Implement therapeutic services that are consistent with the program model and philosophy, and individual treatment plan for each resident
• Effectively manage crises
• Use appropriate language and tone when setting expectations and limits for clients
• Implement and actively participate in the activity schedule with the goal of encouraging adaptive behaviors and improve social skills
• Assist and teach residents skills necessary for self-care and activities of daily living
• Participate in medication management for residents
• Provide transportation for residents as needed
• Complete documentation as required and assigned
• Maintain therapeutic and professional boundaries
• Comply with all contractual, licensing, and safety standards
• Maintain up to date certifications for CPR/First Aid and CPI
• Attend and participate in scheduled supervisions and LUK trainings
• Gain an understanding and commitment to LUK’s Mission, Vision, and Values and provide congruent services

Knowledge and Experience Required:

• Associate’s Degree in Human Services or closely related field preferred
• 1-5 years of experience working in a residential setting preferred
• Bilingual/bicultural candidates encouraged to apply

Job Location:
The Residential Skills Counselor will work in North Central Massachusetts. Transportation required.

Salary Range and Benefits:
Pay Range: 12. Salary Range: $41,600 – $51,500. Salary ranges within each pay grade are based on qualifications, skills, and experience.
