Summary The nuclear medicine / PET radiographer will be responsible for acquisition and processing of all nuclear medicine and PET/CT exams, performing quality control on all nuclear medicine related equipment both imaging and non-imaging, and receiving all incoming RAM packages. These packages will be documented and handled appropriately per regulation. The NMT will prepare and administer the appropriate radiopharmaceuticals following the department's procedure manual and record the necessary data. Prior to administration, the patient will be identified by at least their full name and date of birth. Imaging procedures will be performed as outlined in the procedure manual. The technologist will explain and answer any questions the patient may have prior to beginning the procedure. Patient care will be delivered while always ensuring patient safety practices and guidelines are met. The NMT will perform all tasks following the ALARA concept to insure that levels of radiation exposure do not exceed those defined under ALARA and Federal/State agencies. Responsibilities Dose Calculations and Administration/Radiotherapy: Prepare appropriate radiopharmaceuticals for use following procedure manual and record necessary data in computer for dose calculations. Receive, open, log and check in all incoming packages and enter into the computer system. Calculate, dispense and administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients undergoing procedures in nuclear medicine. Verify patient identity by at least full name and date of birth. Record all data into the computer system. Follow NRC, State and TJC when dealing with all radioactive material used in nuclear medicine. Imaging Procedures: Explain and answer questions to patients having nuclear medicine procedures. Visually check that patient and all necessary records are present. Place the patient on the imaging table, explain positioning, instrumentation and time to complete testing. Perform dynamic, static and/or SPECT, SPECT/CT or PET/CT imaging procedures on patient in accordance with procedure manual, process study for review by nuclear medicine physician staff. Observe patients for changes and can initiate CPR as necessary. Check quality of images and perform QC on instruments to ensure quality images. Communicate with physicians regarding patient’s studies and communicate results to designated hospital personnel where indicated. Enter patient data into Penn Chart to ensure accurate information. Instruct students of nuclear medicine when indicated. Maintain neat and clean work area and replace supplies/equipment prior to each examination and rotation. Instrumentational: Operate imaging equipment and related computer systems along with support equipment. Perform QC procedures on equipment and troubleshoot minor problems prior to reporting them to first line supervisor. Record and maintain standard imaging logs and records to conform to TJC and NRC/State standards. Check operation and calibration of survey equipment and monitoring devices against known standards. Report any problems with imaging or survey equipment to first line supervisor. Non‑Imaging Procedures: Operate all laboratory auxiliary equipment for routine laboratory procedures. Perform venipuncture, separate and label blood components. Prepare samples for counting and store waste by‑products in safe area. Perform QC procedures on all laboratory equipment. Radiation Safety: Receive and check all incoming radionuclide shipments for contamination according to NRC/State regulations. Dispose of radioactivity and contamination in accordance with RSO and NRC/State regulations, recording all radioactive waste storage and dispositions properly. Use appropriate instrumentation to monitor that levels of radiation do not exceed those defined under the ALARA concept and Federal/State agencies. Provide a safe environment for patient studies to ensure that patient exposure is in line with ALARA concept. Machines, Tools and Equipment: Operate all nuclear medicine equipment such as gamma camera, computers, SPECT/CT and PET/CT systems and radio pharmacy equipment. Deal with emergency supplies and routine patient care supplies. Credentials Basic Cardiac Life Support (required) Certification from ARRT(N) or CNMT in nuclear medicine. If not currently board certified, must obtain certification within one year of date of hire and must maintain licensure (required). Education or Equivalent Experience H.S. Diploma/GED (required) Completion of an accredited Nuclear medicine program (required).
