Space Mission Deputy Project Manager

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), is NASA's science and operations center for missions including the Hubble (HST) and James Webb (JWST) Space Telescopes. STScI leads observation planning, data analysis, public engagement, and data archiving for flagship missions. Our staff spans astronomy, engineering, education, IT, communications, and administrationworking together to bring space science to the world.

The STScI James Webb Space Telescope Mission Office is seeking a Deputy Project Manager to support the JWST Project Manager and Mission Head in managing the JWST Science and Operations Center. The JWST Mission Office leads the STScI work on the mission, spanning the development and utilization of the science and operations systems, execution of the science program and operation of the JWST observatory. The mission office is the STScI organizational interface to NASA, international partner space agencies, ESA and CSA, and to industry partners.

This position can support hybrid work (with a minimum of three days per week). Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local area. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

The annual salary range for this title is $185,000 - $210,000. The posted salary range represents a general guideline; however, STScI considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience, education, and skill, and current market conditions.

Position Responsibilities Focus on the management of the Science and Operations Center development and sustaining engineering work, interfacing with the engineering teams and coordinating their activities to successfully deliver integrated system builds in accordance with the integrated master schedule. Other responsibilities include: Working with science operations management to ensure that the system capabilities satisfy the operational needs Managing the S&OC build/release process Assisting with contract proposal development and negotiations Interfacing with STScI IT services to ensure that the IT infrastructure continues to satisfy the needs of the mission

Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications: Education an advanced engineering degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field. The successful candidate will have 10 years or more experience managing NASA space-related engineering projects in addition to: a solid technical background of work experience including familiarity with space science missions familiarity with observatory science and flight operations ground systems knowledge of spacecraft operations a thorough understanding of software development, integration and testing demonstrated knowledge of project management practices; PMP certification desired, but not required demonstrated leadership qualities experience managing large engineering and science teams experience with resource management and planning experience with proposal development and negotiations Experience working on NASA missions a definite asset The substitution of additional relevant education and/or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.
