In the Float Pool, you will work with diverse populations of patients in numerous units, departments and/or locations while learning from many of our best caregivers. Some of the patient populations you may serve include Behavioral Health, Emergency Department, ICU, Stepdown, Progressive Care, Medical/Surgical Care, Women's Health, Oncology and Orthopaedics. As a Patient Companion, you will help facilitate Cleveland Clinic's mission by providing compassionate and top-quality care. In this role, you will assist RNs, physicians, dietitians and other staff in coordinating and fulfilling treatment plans. A PRN caregiver in this position works varying days and hours from 6:45AM - 7:15PM or 6:45PM - 7:15AM, including 3 shifts per 4-week schedule, 1 weekend shift per 4-week schedule and 1 major and 1 minor holiday per calendar year.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.

• Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.

• Accompany and assist patients at all times, including during transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.

• Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.

• Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.

• Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.

• Acknowledge patient concerns/needs and notify appropriate caregivers for assistance when necessary.

• Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• High School Diploma or GED

• Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation

• Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire

• Home healthcare experience

• Experience working as a PCNA

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
