The Work You Will Do: Shop Supervisor - District Five / Oviedo Maintenance This position will supervises employees spending the majority of the time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees’ work. Where You Will Work: District Five Oviedo Operations 2400 Camp Road Oviedo, FL 32765 Annual Salary Range: $57,213.30 - $74,040.74 Your Specific Responsibilities: Supervises employees spending the majority of the time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees’ work. Has the authority to effectively recommend the hiring, transferring, suspension, layoff, recalls, promotions, discharges, assignments, rewards, or disciplinary actions for subordinate employees. Plans and directs workloads, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with subordinate staff. Provides direction and ensures that all subordinates receive training and instruction in methods and techniques necessary to safely perform their assigned tasks. Motivates, trains, coaches and guides subordinate employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed while conducting work activities. Plans and directs workloads, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with subordinate staff to ensure completion of routine and preventative maintenance of automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment and small machines. Recommends production planning, scheduling and control methods. Ensures safe work practices are adhered to by shop personnel. Assigns work based on information available from the operator of the disabled equipment regarding the nature of the problem; knowledge of the capabilities of the repair personnel; determination of priorities based on knowledge of department activities and knowledge of general equipment maintenance practices. Ensures Quality Assurance Review (QAR) requirements are followed and met each year. Adjusts operations as needed based off of yearly QAR results. Oversees crews performing maintenance activities (optional duty if overseeing contracted employees). Oversees a large vehicular fleet of automotive and heavy equipment for developing a maintenance program for the Operations center as well as for the servicing and repairing of transient Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) vehicles as necessary. Duties include directing periodic inspections of equipment to ensure that it is properly maintained in a good state of repair and initiating and preparing periodic reports of maintenance costs. Reports include the number of vehicles repaired and types of equipment which will be needed in order to conduct an effective maintenance program. Controls operation of the fuel service facilities. Monitors fuel conservation and fuel allotment to other state agencies. Prepares and maintains inventory and supply records and initiates purchase requisitions. Oversees the Shop and Warehouse. Ensures the warehouse is maintained according to policies and procedures. Reviews and ensures warehouse commodities are purchased and kept stocked as needed. Reviews and originates shop work orders, P-Card purchases, requisitions, local charge accounts, etc. Evaluates equipment for sale, trade or junk and submits proper forms. Assists in conducting and making preparations for the sale of equipment. Assists and directs repair personnel in solving difficult repair problems which may also involve consultation with outside sources. Ensures the quality of work leaving the repair shop and reviews work completed to assure personnel are performing work competently. Conducts monthly industrial safety inspections of automotive shop, welding shop, and fueling facilities and completes necessary quality assurance checklists. Initiates purchase requisition for obtaining repair parts by a variety of methods depending on the scope of the individual job, makes decisions on which purchasing method will be used based on the dollar value of quotes. Provides information regarding the nature of repairs involved, specifically whether repairs are for wreck damage, whether Florida Department of Transportation has a legal claim against the outside party or whether the unit needing repairs has been traded. The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: The principles & techniques of auto and equipment repair work. The operation of heavy equipment. Materials used in highway maintenance and in the repair of automotive/heavy equipment. Procedures used to make repairs to total cost of equipment. Invoice processing, purchasing procedures and recordkeeping techniques. Skills in: The use of a variety of hand tools and mechanical equipment. Handling heavy equipment. Verbal and written communication. Computer operations and the use of office software. Ability to: Supervise employees. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Walk, kneel, bend, twist and carry light to medium loads. Schedule and perform routine maintenance on a fleet of vehicles. Other Job-Related Requirements: While on-duty status, the position’s Incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver license (CDL) the Incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. A Class “B” CDL is required at time of hire. Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position. May be required to work with or around hazardous materials. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of section 215.422, F.S., related State Comptroller’s rules, and the Department of Transportation’s invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures. This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed. In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
