Structural Steel Fitter/Welder

Position Summary The Fitter is responsible for understanding blueprints and welding techniques to execute the highest standards of welding performance. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Interpret blueprints to fabricate structural steel Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions. Set up components for welding equipment per specifications (e.g., cut material with gas torch to match measurements) Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards Keep work areas clean and organized Requirements Proven experience as a welder Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (flux-core, MIG weld) Experience in using electrical or manual tools (grinders, squares, tape measures, hand tools) Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face shield, gloves, etc.) Attention to detail Ability to learn safe overhead crane operations Proficient in English Professional Certification (e.g., an AWS welding certificate) will be a plus Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory responsibilities Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. Education and/or Experience High School Diploma or equivalent Prior experience using overhead cranes is preferred Prior experience in a similar role is preferred Other Skills Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work effectively with others. While performing certain duties of the job, the employee is required to squat, bend, twist, lift, pull, and reach. Lifting is required up to 75 lbs. Must be flexible in hours worked and willing to work overtime. Work Environment Position performs work mostly in the shop setting, which includes a variety of working conditions. These include the following conditions: noise level fluctuations from moderate to high, use of personal protective equipment, and machine/equipment use. Position involves everyday risks or exposure to elements that require safety precautions.
