Component Processing Technician - Donor Operations

The Donor Operations department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and reliable blood supply for cancer patients. Behind every donation is a highly controlled manufacturing process that transforms whole blood into components that can be safely stored, distributed, and used to support patients throughout their treatment. The team operates under rigorous quality, safety, and regulatory standards to ensure every blood product meets the highest expectations for patient care.
• Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.
• Manufactures whole blood into components in accordance with current good manufacturing practices and departmental standard operating procedures.
• Follows the guidance of the supervisor and lead technician.
• Properly stores and distributes blood and blood components.
• Operate, maintain and perform quality control on equipment.
• Maintain accurate, legible and complete manufacturing records.
• Properly quarantine and dispose of unsuitable blood and blood components.
• Ensure the required monthly blood product quality control is performed ensuring the manufacturing process is in control.
• Works with supervisors and coordinators in the production of specialty products.
• Acquires and maintains proficiency in computer functions.
• Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits.
• Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies.
• Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance.
• Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures.
• Readily instructs new personnel and students regarding theories, techniques, and processes.
• Complies with all safety policies and procedures and uses applicable protective equipment at all time. Maintains organized processes to provide quality blood products.
• Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.
• Remains knowledgeable of processes and procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving.
• Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies. Performs all tasks in positive manner to result in appropriate positive customer service.
• Complies with section's telephone courtesy policies and procedures.
• Reports results of problem resolutions to callers in accordance with section's policies.
• Demonstrates cooperation when working with both internal and external customers.
• Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances; remains willing and capable of assisting with crisis situations.
• Maintains good attendance and punctuality per the absence policy.
• Consistently well groomed; maintains a high standard of personal hygiene; adheres to the section/divisional dress code. This Component Processing Technician position offers the opportunity to work directly in the manufacturing and processing of blood products in a highly regulated healthcare environment. The role is ideal for a detail-oriented and dependable professional who takes pride in following precise procedures, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring the quality and safety of products that directly support cancer patients.
In this role, you will manufacture whole blood into blood components in accordance with current good manufacturing practices, departmental SOPs, and applicable regulations. Responsibilities include properly storing and distributing blood components, operating and maintaining processing equipment, performing required quality control, maintaining accurate manufacturing records, and appropriately quarantining or disposing of unsuitable blood products. You will play an important role in maintaining product quality and regulatory compliance by ensuring required monthly blood product quality control is completed, documenting quality assurance activities, monitoring inventory, and remaining current on procedures and policies. You will also work with supervisors and coordinators in the production of specialty blood products and assist with troubleshooting and problem-solving to maintain an efficient manufacturing process. Strong attention to detail, accountability, and teamwork are essential to success in this position. You will work independently while supporting coworkers as needed and may assist with training new employees and students on established techniques and processes. Because the work directly affects the availability and safety of blood products, the ability to consistently follow procedures and maintain accurate documentation is critical. The role also requires a strong commitment to customer service and professionalism. You will communicate with internal and external customers, assist with resolving questions or issues, and remain calm and professional in varying circumstances.
