Position Summary RSI is recruiting for a Field Technician who will work as part of a team that operates and maintains a network of remote instrumentation, often referred to as Operational Technology (OT), and interacts with personnel assigned to provide site operations support for system operations typically located at remote sites. This instrumentation primarily collects environmental data but is also used to administer remote control and monitor treatment processes at remote sites. The remote telemetry network is composed of data loggers, meteorological sensors, water level transducers, flow meters, and various other sensors and equipment. This instrumentation includes the site-based SOARS (System Operations and Analysis at Remote Sites) units as a critical piece of the infrastructure. This position supports infrastructure that controls and maintains environmental monitoring and remediation systems for DOE Office of Legacy Management. This position is responsible for ensuring safe execution of work conducted by the project team. Job Title: Field Technician Location(s): Grand Junction, CO Status: Full-Time FLSA: Exempt Hiring Range: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.) This position is required to travel 25-50% of the time. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist in collection and maintenance of an asset inventory for all OT related systems spanning the full lifecycle. Troubleshoot and diagnose errors and inconsistencies with endpoint devices and integration into SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and telemetry environments. Coordinate with the SOARS and OT teams to ensure that equipment is patched according to cyber security directives. Diligently plan and track software patching. Coordinate with OT and SOARS teams to track, apply, and document password updates for applicable OT devices. Coordinate closely with site operations and other relevant teams to communicate any potential disruptions to normal operations. Communicate with subject matter experts and site leads to describe how collected data relates to in-the-field variables. Respond to unplanned disruptions in a timely manner to help resolve issues relating to OT telemetry. Some OT telemetry administration may be done remotely while some may require travel to various LM sites across the US. Provide guidance and support in the ongoing upkeep of the SCADA/EMCS/telemetry systems. This system upkeep may include EMCS (Energy Management and Control Systems). Verify accuracy of data and equipment, metering values, alarm points, etc. often working with other SMEs (subject matter experts) to identify and establish standards for specific systems. Coordinate with SOARS and OT teams to perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, such as checking, cleaning, calibrating, or repairing equipment, to detect and prevent problems. Participate in training or continuing education activities to stay abreast of industry advances. Monitor and respond to system generated alerts. Travel to assigned DOE LM sites to install, maintain, and replace equipment (26-49 % travel). Participate in the creation and review of operation and maintenance documentation and any other applicable documentation. Complete work-specific safety and health documents, including job safety analysis, pre-job safety briefs, and work authorization forms (e.g., confined space entry, penetration permit, ladder inspection, heat stress). Ensure these forms are properly stored, according to record management requirements. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment malfunctions; replace defective components or parts using hand tools or power tools; and work with manufacturers or field representatives to fix equipment or to procure replacement parts. Maintain working knowledge of various low voltage instruments, including but not limited to weighing rain gauges, tipping bucket rain gauges, sonic anemometers, solar irradiance sensors, flow meters, automatic valves, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, relative humidity sensors, temperature sensors, barometric pressure sensors, water level sensors, and soil moisture sensors. Compile and maintain records, such as schematics that document installed equipment. Integrate software or hardware components, using computers, microprocessors, or control architecture. Clearly communicate site configuration changes to all applicable stakeholders. Participate in training or continuing education activities to stay abreast of industry advances. Install and maintain low voltage electrical control systems, sensors, or electrical equipment, including data loggers, meteorologic stations, transducers, flow meters, and programmable logic controllers. Maintain equipment logs that record performance problems, repairs, calibrations, or tests. Inspect components of equipment for accurate assembly and installation or for defects, such as loose connections or frayed wires. Calibrate testing instruments and perform calibration verification checks on installed or repaired equipment to meet prescribed data quality objectives. Consult with stakeholders to plan and design the installation and layout of equipment or to resolve problems related to system operation or maintenance. Participate in project planning and design drawing reviews for various types of projects. Study blueprints, schematics, manuals, or other specifications to determine installation procedures and to troubleshoot systems. Receive and maintain specialized training, including but not limited to Confined Space Entry, Radiological Worker II, CPR/First Aid, Lock Out/Tag Out, and UTV Operation. Determine feasibility of using standardized equipment or develop specifications for equipment to perform required functions. Operate and ensure maintenance of vehicles according to training and GSA standards. Other duties as assigned. Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience Bachelor’s degree in STEM field, Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Electronics and Maintenance or similar vocational/technical certificate with relevant experience. 7 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of the fundamental principles and concepts of environmental monitoring, data acquisition and storage. Fundamental understanding of high voltage AC and DC power requirements to support project planning and to know when a certified electrician is necessary to perform certain work. Proficiency in entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form. Ability to lift/carry equipment and travel by foot over rough terrain. Ability to provide guidance and expert advice to management or other groups on technical, systems, or process-related topics. Ability to research, analyze, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and procedures to a variety of situations and to recommend timely solutions. Ability to take meticulous notes and produce detailed system architecture diagrams. Ability to work safely in an industrial environment. Potential to perform work in confined spaces and radiologically controlled areas and/or outdoors in inclement weather. Must be able to work a hybrid schedule with at least 50% of working hours in‑office or in‑field. Must be a US citizen Desired: Knowledge of PLCs (programable logic controllers) and HMIs (human‑machine interfaces). Familiarity with PLC/HMI programming syntax, including how programming changes will translate to equipment operation. Desired: Proficient with data loggers and data logger software. Desired Skills and Abilities The ability to troubleshoot various systems including industrial control systems, power systems, radio networks, cellular networks, liquid flow meters, meteorological and environmental instruments, and IP (internet protocol) cameras. The ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. Experience using various field service tools, including but not limited to multimeters, clamp meters, mA simulation meters, battery testers, and various other field calibration verification instruments. Possess a broad knowledge of OT systems and controls, including power metering, switchgear controls and automation, Programmable Logic Controllers, HMI, and SCADA systems.
