Job Description Supervised By: Transportation Manager and Lead Mechanic Supervises: No supervisory responsibility Position Summary Under the supervision of the Transportation Manager and oversight of the Lead Mechanic, performs a variety of skilled repair and maintenance tasks on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment. Essential Job Functions Performs mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and maintenance of buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment, with guidance and direction from the Lead Mechanic. Assists in the machining of parts for automotive equipment and machinery according to specifications. Prepares necessary records pertaining to work performed. Follows a predetermined preventative maintenance program on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment. Assists in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and materials. Conducts performance tests and inspections of new and newly repaired apparatus, vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable standards. Submits reports and maintains detailed records of all tests, repairs, inventory and inspections. Performs snow plowing around Otsego County Bus System with Tractor or pick‑up truck. Performs other duties as directed. Typical Qualifications High school diploma or GED with college or vocational coursework in automotive repair. Practical knowledge of heavy and light automotive mechanical equipment maintenance normally acquired through at least three years of automotive maintenance and repair experience. The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License. Negative results on pre‑employment and random USDOT drug and alcohol screens for this “safety sensitive” position. Must have at least two state mechanical certifications at the time of employment. Certification as a State Master Mechanic or NIASE certification in diesel, gas engine, and brake repair is preferred. May increase hourly rate by additional twenty‑five cents ($0.25) per hour for each additional license/certificate (up to six) signifying areas of expertise over the two (2) such licenses/certificates required by the Employer for initial employment. Ability to use a variety of automotive tools and diagnostic equipment to perform automotive repairs. Ability to inspect and troubleshoot a variety of automotive problems. Knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in maintaining vehicles and equipment. Ability to effectively diagnose equipment problems and work cooperatively with equipment users to maintain preventive maintenance schedules. Ability to maintain accurate and complete maintenance records, both in electronic and non‑electronic format. Ability to read and follow instructions and equipment manufacturer’s manuals. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, bus patrons and the public. Skill in the use of office equipment and technology and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position. Physical Demands And Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, squat, use hands and fingers, talk, hear, and view written documents, use hand strength to grasp tools, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, operate vibrating machinery, and operate motorized equipment and vehicles. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 50 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, as needed, for employees who need to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. Work is conducted in both indoor and outdoor weather conditions near moving mechanical equipment. Noise level is usually moderate but can be very loud. Otsego County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
