EHS&S Specialist - Chemical Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Emergency Response

Position Summary This role will lead the day-to-day implementation and maintenance of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security/Emergency Response (EHS&S) programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. As the EHS&S Specialist with expertise in Chemicals, Industrial Hygiene, and Emergency Response, you will develop, implement, and maintain critical health, safety, and hazardous materials (chemical and biological) safety programs to mitigate key risks at the site. You will serve as the primary site SME for chemical safety and Industrial Hygiene, oversee the Hazardous Materials Emergency Response team, and champion EHS principles across the organization. Responsibilities Assess chemical and biological hazard risks from new and existing materials and processes, evaluate control effectiveness, and advise on control methodologies. Conduct Industrial Hygiene monitoring, analyze results, issue reports, and manage exposure monitoring/modeling and the chemical safety program. Integrate Industrial Hygiene considerations into capital and minor works projects, identifying and managing risks through technical innovation and support. Evaluate compliance with federal, state, and local legislation and GSK requirements, interpret regulations, and provide compliance recommendations. Perform program audits, facility inspections, and generate corrective actions. Manage key health and safety risks to personnel, contractors, visitors, and the company’s reputation with regulators and the public. Implement and verify the effectiveness of EHS&S programs at the Marietta site, ensuring hazards and risks are identified and mitigated. Embed GSK standards into projects and operations to mitigate key site risks. Develop and implement EHS&S Management Systems for health, safety, environment, and security regulations. Oversee the formation and management of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), including member selection, equipment procurement, maintenance, and targeted training. Direct ERT operations, conduct routine equipment inspections, and coordinate skill-building exercises for industrial incident preparedness. Develop, conduct, and evaluate training on EHS&S programs for supervisors and staff to identify hazards and conduct inspections. Recommend and develop specific safety improvement plans and programs based on trend analysis and performance data. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, occupational health, or a related field. 2+ years of progressive EHS&S experience, including facility EHS roles and specific work in chemical safety/industrial hygiene and emergency response. Professional certification (CSP or CIH) preferred; if not certified, ability to become certified within 2 years of hire. Membership in relevant professional EHS institutions (e.g., ASSP, ACGIH) to stay current. Experience in chemical, laboratory, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, or similar regulatory manufacturing environments. Availability to support occasional extended hours, shift/weekend coverage, and 24/7/365 emergency response; willingness to travel Preferred Qualifications Working knowledge of OSHA general industry (29 CFR 1910) and construction (29 CFR 1926) regulations. Practical experience developing, implementing, and managing high-hazard programs, risk assessments, controls, emergency response, security, and health & wellbeing initiatives. Practical knowledge of risk management for construction projects and integrating EHS requirements into project design, construction, commissioning, and operations. Awareness of environmental compliance requirements and experience applying them in operations. Strong organizational, troubleshooting, and decision‑making skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication; able to simplify complex issues and influence stakeholders at all levels. Ability to prioritize work, develop short‑ and long‑term strategies, and apply change‑management techniques. Flexibility to adapt plans quickly in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment and evaluate alternative solutions while maintaining compliance with regulations and GSK standards.
