Student Success Coach

Student Success Coach Location: Main Campus, Brownsville, Texas Employment Type: Full‑Time (FLSA Exempt) Student Success Coach is responsible for providing intensive advising in academic and career goals for students as they transition into college life. The role individualizes students’ success through a case‑management approach for a specialized population and coordinates resources to empower students to stay in school and achieve success. The coach will communicate with students through all available channels, guide them through critical processes, and track outcomes. The position also supports the college’s outreach efforts by re‑engaging students who have stopped out and helping them return to complete their degrees. The coach contributes to retention and completion strategies within the assigned caseload. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Serve as the specialized advisor for a caseload, assisting new and current students with placement, registration, graduation, and transfer opportunities in person, over the phone, or online. Assist students with financial aid application procedures and uploading missing documents through student information systems. Counsel students in the general population and special groups, including veterans, academically at‑risk, transfer, bachelor’s, online, athletes, grant initiative cohorts, and international students. Prepare and deliver updated reports on the special population caseload to internal student services administration and external stakeholders per MOU agreements. Resolve enrollment process issues, review student degree audits, and guide students to college and community resources that support their career goals. Collaborate with faculty to ensure courses align with students’ degree plans and that progress toward graduation is appropriate. Develop and facilitate workshops and presentations using PowerPoint and other media for diverse student populations. Present to students during registration cycles in coordination with faculty. Maintain awareness of best practices, emerging trends, and new legislation related to admissions, records, advising, testing, and financial aid. Assist with course equivalency evaluations from previous high schools, colleges, and universities. Compute and verify grade point averages, class standing, and individual degree plans for completeness and accuracy. Evaluate residency status and communicate appropriate residency classification to students, staff, and the college community. Ensure compliance with SEVIS and other applicable immigration regulations. Verify and certify reports, files, enrollment status, and records within FERPA guidelines and assist in preparing semester grade transcripts, degree plans, diplomas, and certificates. Assist with the preparation and production of new student orientation and college commencement exercises. Assess student needs, goals, interests, and prior academic experiences to guide the design of successful academic and career plans. Provide guidance in course selection in line with students’ career plans and academic status. Work closely with college faculty to monitor academic progress of students. Maintain current knowledge of all degree and certificate programs. Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, and follow the work schedule to meet job demands. Work hours may include evenings, holidays, or weekends as needed for deadlines and special events. Complete duties in compliance with college standards, policies, and guidelines. Use interpersonal skills and make sound judgments to determine how responsibilities are completed with coworkers, supervisors, faculty, staff, students, and customers. Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by Texas Southmost College. Support the values and institutional goals as defined in the College’s Strategic Plan. Participate in the development of outcomes, monitor assessment of those outcomes, and assist in the development of action plans for improvement. Participate in systematic review and evaluation per the institutional effectiveness model adopted by the College. Promote positive morale and teamwork within the department and provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and the community. Serve on committees as appropriate and as appointed by the supervisor. Perform additional duties as assigned. Required Knowledge and Skills Strong commitment to the mission of Texas Southmost College. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills; ability to work independently with little direction. Demonstrated organizational skills in handling, directing, and prioritizing multiple and complex assignments or projects while maintaining records. Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, college employees, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and present information to senior management and other audiences. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Proficiency in a high‑tech, all‑digital environment. Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential data. Proficient in the use of e‑mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, and the Internet to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with one (1) year of direct experience working in recruitment, admissions, advising, records, outreach, or a related field in a college or university setting; OR an Associate’s degree with three (3) years of direct experience in the same areas. Experience working effectively in a team environment with a customer‑service focus. Preferred Education and Experience Bilingual in English‑Spanish. Certificates and Licensures None required. Physical Demands Frequent standing; occasional walking, sitting, handling objects, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; talking, hearing, tasting, smelling. Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The job environment usually involves moderate noise levels, occasional exposure to mechanical parts and electrical shock risks.
