HAINES JETBOAT CAPTAIN JOB DESCRIPTION
TIMEFRAME: May - October
QUALIFICATIONS: CPR & First Aid Certifications, 25 ton captain license or higher
Chilkat River Adventures operates on the glacially fed Chilkat River, which is home to the largest concentration of eagles in the world. Your vessel is specially designed for navigation on this silt-laden river which is the only access to a remote, roadless portion of the preserve. Captains must be very attentive of the river, as it has many channels that are consistently changing with the weather and time of year. We primarily work with cruise passengers, who will often dock in Skagway and ferry over to Haines. Drivers will transport guests from the dock to the jetboat site, which is ~45 minutes away. Captains are responsible for giving safety briefings, gearing up guests, and helping board the boat. You will also be responsible for educating, engaging, and spotting wildlife along the river. Boat rides last for about an hour and a half.
REQUIREMENTS
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Have at least 3 years operating experience.
- Must provide USCG Credentials.
- If new to Alaska waters, must provide boat operator training checklist and procedure for the captain.
- The ability to carry up to 50 lbs. of gear repeatedly throughout the day.
- Knowledge of boat upkeep and maintenance.
- Completion of CRA program training. Training will include policies and procedures, maintenance and emergency response.
- Guest safety first, then entertain guests, educate guests, and last but not least, engage guests with questions.
- Have and maintain a clean driving record in order to be insured by CG company automotive insurance.
- Responsible for communicating all incidents to Haines Program Manager.
- Must at all times be clean, well-groomed, courteous, honest and reliable.
- Must possess a positive attitude that is friendly, considerate, strong, and energetic.
- Provide information about SE Alaska environment, history, and the surrounding flora and fauna.
- Must possess the desire to continually improve his/her knowledge and skills.
- Must be willing to work as a strong team member, assisting in the maintenance of group morale.
- Help load and unload guests and gear throughout the trips.
- Respond to gear breakdowns, injuries, and wildlife encounters.
- Outfit clients with PFDs and any other applicable equipment (with instruction on wear and fit).
- Follow a tight time schedule and be on time with your trips.
- Assist with other jobs/projects as needed by AMG administration, this may include but is not limited to:
- Associated program maintenance needs.
- Driving of passengers or equipment.
- Assist with grounds/lodging maintenance, cleaning, and general support.
- You may be required to cross train in other areas to assist with other tours.
- Early to mid-June through late August is the height of the cruise ship season.In this period guides may be required to work up to 40+ hours/week.During the height of the season long periods of time off will likely not be able to be provided.
Potential to live on private property along the Chilkat River located in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines, Alaska. RV available or space to bring your own. Shower, kitchen facility, and washer and dryer available on site. Bedding and personal items are not included.
- Rent deductions are made twice a month with 50% of the month's rent deducted from the 1st and 2nd paycheck.
- Rent is prorated for the first month, rent for the last pay period will be deducted in full even if you vacate housing early.
- Employees must vacate housing within 48 hours of their final shift unless other arrangements have been approved by management.
- Pets - Must be approved by management, approval may be rescinded if your pet causes problems or is not friendly towards humans and other animals.
- Failure to abide by rules outlined in the employee manual and housing agreement may result in immediate expulsion from employee housing.
Employees are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Haines, AMG will assist wherever possible in helping outline necessary steps in travel plans. Please make arrangements with a few days on either end of the season for mishaps. Alaska weather can delay planes/ferries bound from Juneau or make driving conditions difficult or impassable.
