Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

$139,400.00 - $230,000.00

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. Individual will complete advanced software end to end engineering tasks that span many parts of a system including designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system specifications. Individual will also consult with users to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications, manage the effective use of resources, act as subject matter expert across multiple applications, systems and technologies, leverage technical and business knowledge to drive the planning and execution of complex initiatives, participate in the design/ development process, and provide technical leadership.

What Will You Do?

• Lead an engineering team by building alongside team members while remaining accountable for their professional growth, the team delivery outcomes, and the technical health of its systems.
• Own technical decisions within established engineering standards; engage senior engineering leadership to help shape and influence broader impacting decisions.
• Partner with product ownership on outcome definition; own system design, delivery cost, and technical feasibility while actively contributing to scope and priority discussions.
• Perform complex analysis, advanced design, and development on high-visibility, high-impact work across the full system stack.
• Mentor engineers at every experience level through pairing, code review, design review, and deliberate delegation; provide candid, timely feedback and identify what each team member is ready for next.
• Manage technical trade-offs related to system flexibility, technical debt, and cross-team integration contracts; keep those trade-offs visible and on the backlog.
• Surface capacity constraints and escalate unresolved technical-product disagreements rather than absorbing them quietly.
• Maintain operational artifacts and ensure system status is findable without interrupting the team.
• Contribute to broader engineering standards and represent the team's ground-level perspective on cross-cutting patterns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

• Five or more years of progressive software engineering experience, including technical leadership of team efforts.
• Delivery -- Advanced delivery skills: ability to set software design strategy, apply automated testing and feedback loops, ensure production readiness, and monitor the health of adjacent systems.
• Technical Leadership -- Demonstrated ability to reason about system flexibility, manage technical debt deliberately, and own integration contracts between systems.
• Domain Expertise -- Track record of building business partnerships, influencing priorities with technically grounded solutions, and staying current with industry trends.
• People Development -- Ability to assess engineers' strengths and readiness, communicate growth expectations plainly, and create learning opportunities through deliberate delegation and mentorship.
• Problem Solving -- Strong problem solver who uses data and proofs of concept to navigate ambiguous, loosely scoped problems; reflects on outcomes and applies lessons to future work.
• Communication -- Able to describe technical concepts in terms the business understands, document work concisely, give and receive candid feedback, and foster inclusive team discussion.
• Agile Fluency -- Comfortable working in an agile environment; able to balance outcome delivery, debt, and enabler work across sprints in partnership with product ownership.

What is a Must Have?

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
• 6 additional years of software engineering experience.
