Job Summary:
Performs maintenance, repair and adjustments of wheelchairs (Manual and Power), adapted equipment, and mobility aids that will be utilized for therapeutic purposes for children with orthopedic challenges. Train/educate staff on the proper use and safety of equipment purchased. Installs equipment purchased for power/manual chairs, and adapted equipment. Assembles equipment purchased for the use of students. Equipment includes (adaptive chairs, standers, strollers, wheelchairs, tables, etc.), Inspect wheelchairs for warranty acceptance or return for repairs.
Essential Functions:
- Inspect, maintain, and repair wheelchairs, mobility aids and related equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance on both manual and power wheelchairs to minimize breakdown.
- Provide training and support to staff and students on proper use and care of wheelchairs
- Collaborate with special education staff, Occupational, Physical, Speech therapist, and other professionals to assess wheelchair functionality and suitability for students needs
- Document all repairs and maintenance performed maintaining service records
- Assist with the evaluation and recommendation of new wheelchair purchases when necessary
- Diagnose and trouble shoot technical problems and come up with resolutions
- Maintaining tools and equipment in good working order
- Testing new wheelchairs/equipment before they are issued to students
- Maintaining inventory by keeping track of wheelchair parts, seating components, etc
- Making modifications to wheelchairs for students such as adding, head, chin, knee controls etc.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Five years of experience in mechanical assembly/repair of electrical devices in powerchairs preferred
- Experience using hand and power tools
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of: the principles, methods, tools and procedures of the orthopedic and prosthetic repair trade. the social and behavioral problems of orthopedically handicapped children. knowledge of basic computer skills. knowledgeable about trouble shooting and diagnosing equipment. knowledgeable of various types of mobility aids.
- Demonstrated ability to: relate to and understand the social and behavioral problems of orthopedically handicapped children. understand and follow oral and written instructions. establish and maintain effective working relationships. maintain a maintenance log for repairs and assembly of equipment.
