WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY

As a Microbiologist, you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by:

• Independently planning, developing, implementing, and managing all assigned experiments and protocols. Making decisions as to the time and resources required to perform the experiments and establishes plans and schedules.
• Developing new methods for and collecting, analyzing, organizing and recording experimental data appropriate for publication.
• Managing the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including coordinating activities of diverse laboratory research projects and personnel.
• Practicing and enforcing safe laboratory practices and hazardous materials handling; following established safety guidelines and disseminating safety standards to all staff.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Qualifications: You must possess one of the items listed below.

Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:

• Independently planning and managing microbiology experiments and protocols.
• Developing new methods and analyzing data for publication in scientific journals.
• Managing daily laboratory operations, including budgets, equipment procurement, and training staff.
• Enforcing safe laboratory practices and hazardous materials handling guidelines

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
