Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides skilled nursing care in a high-risk, high-volume environment, supporting patients through all stages of labor, delivery, and postpartum care. This role requires expertise in electronic fetal monitoring, newborn care, and the ability to function as a Baby Nurse during deliveries. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal outcomes for mothers and newborns, managing complex patient needs in a fast-paced setting. Responsibilities:

• Provide nursing care for high-risk labor and delivery patients, including first-time mothers and those with complex diagnoses.
• Perform electronic fetal monitoring and adhere to AWHONN staffing guidelines.
• Function as Baby Nurse during delivery, providing immediate newborn care including assessments, eye care, Vitamin K injections, and monitoring until transfer to postpartum.
• Circulate during deliveries without performing circulator screening.
• Float between postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities providing mother/baby care as needed.
• Manage patient care involving medications such as Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate.
• Support midwifery clients, private OB patients, substance recovery adult patients, and community care clinics.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with electronic medical record hard stops, including EPIC and fetal monitoring systems.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license with at least 1 year of high-risk Labor and Delivery experience.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
• Proficiency with electronic fetal monitoring and newborn assessments.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high acuity labor and delivery environment.
• Experience managing high-risk obstetric patients and newborn care.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification.
• AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to float between postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities as needed.
• Work every other weekend and holidays as required.
• Compliance with strict electronic medical record hard stops (EPIC, fetal monitoring).
• High volume unit averaging 15 patients daily and 500-600 deliveries monthly.
• Must adhere to staffing ratios and guidelines per AWHONN standards.
• Postpartum and antepartum float responsibilities include mother/baby care.

Scheduling:

• Schedule is posted every 6 weeks and designed to meet unit needs.
• Shift assignments may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Pre-approved time off is considered case by case.
