Position Title: Police Officer Compensation: $29.44 - $30.61 Department: Public Safety_H Start Date: 10/26/2026 About this opportunity: This position is open to both Tier 1 Certified applicants and Non-Certified applicants. The starting rate range is $29.44 to $30.61 per hour. Additionally, there is a $7,500 sign-on bonus for Tier 1 Certified applicants with a minimum of two years qualifying experience. What you'll do and what you'll bring Position Function: Perform functions related to the preservation of public peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of persons and property, the enforcement of laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the City of Muncie, the enforcement of rules and regulations of Ball State University, and the safeguarding of individual and collective rights of the citizenry. Duties & Responsibilities Properly operate and maintain acceptable levels of proficiency in the use of department issued or approved equipment. Requires the physical ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Requires the physical fitness level that meets current criminal justice standards. Requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods of time and drive patrol vehicles. Requires the ability to run, jump, stand, and walk for long periods of time, and the ability to physically subdue an offender with reasonable force and have reasonable strength to perform necessary lifesaving functions. Task requires a wide field of vision and the visual ability to perceive depth and distinguish colors. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to read, write, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information, and to receive, comprehend and follow oral instructions and information. Task may require use of vehicles and/or bicycles. Perform other related duties as assigned. May require any of the above-mentioned abilities. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty and be able to meet physical fitness standards as defined by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Must pass a written examination and polygraph test pre-offer. Must pass a post offer/pre-employment psychological evaluation, medical, drug and alcohol test. Must pass skills test. Must be at least age 21 at time of hire. Must be a U.S. Citizen in accordance with Indiana code 250IAC 2-3-1. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s degree or two years of college or equivalent experience in law enforcement or two years of active military service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy basic training course, or completion of an equivalent training program approved by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. Law enforcement experience related to a campus/university environment.
