Departmental Overview University Health Services (UHS) provides a comprehensive campus‑based health center offering primary medical care, counseling, psychological services, and health promotion programs. Services include general medical, specialty, urgent care, counseling, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, and the UC Berkeley Sports Medicine Program. Position Summary Provide health care to adolescent and adult patients, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral. Manage clinical responsibilities, supervise mid‑level practitioners and nursing staff, and coordinate care with primary clinicians and specialty providers. Responsibilities Performs procedures within area of specialization such as surgery, OB/GYN, dermatology, sports medicine, occupational health, or psychiatry. Provides primary care to patients requiring advanced expertise and consultative evaluation. Delivers thorough patient education about diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and prevention, ensuring all questions are answered. Conducts surgical procedures with pre‑ and post‑operative care. Obtains accurate clinical history, performs physical examination, and assesses patients to meet or exceed community standards. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests consistent with institutional resources and quality improvement goals. Provides specialty diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures at UHS and community facilities, maintaining quality and utilization standards. Refers patients appropriately for specialty or subspecialty care. Staffs on‑site UHS or Sports Medicine clinics on a schedule determined by the Medical Director. Offers off‑site telephone or office‑based consultations as needed. Coordinates with the Unit Manager to organize on‑site clinics and communicate schedules to UHS staff. Collaborates with UHS staff—physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, health educators, support staff, and administrators—to address patient needs. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and professionalism across diverse backgrounds, including sexual orientations. Maintains complete, timely medical record entries and informs referring clinicians of patient progress. Provides management plan guidelines for ongoing care upon referral. Offers specialty consultation to other health professionals and provides feedback to primary care staff to improve practice. Documents office progress notes, surgical reports, and hospitalization summaries for referring clinicians. Participates in education, peer review, and quality improvement activities as directed. Notifies the Medical Director and/or UHS Risk Manager of potential high‑risk incidents, such as patient complaints and complications. Required Qualifications Education: MD or recognized equivalent. Licenses/Certification: Current Medical License, Board Certification in a non‑primary care specialty (e.g., surgery, OB/GYN, dermatology, psychiatry) with ongoing Maintenance of Certification, California Physician/Surgeon Medical License, NPI Number, and adherence to UHS physician credentialing requirements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expert clinical skills and effective diagnostic and decision‑making abilities within specialty area. Strong communication skills with patients and clinical staff. Collaborative teamwork and ability to influence others. Compliance with community standards of specialty physicians regarding training, board eligibility, certification, and continuing education. Proficiency in electronic health record systems and computer literacy. Adherence to peer review and quality improvement activities at UHS. Preferred Qualifications Maintains medical staff privileges in good standing at local community hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. Salary & Benefits Full‑time effort: 0.2 FTE over a 12‑month period; schedule and hours determined with supervisor. Per diem hourly rate: $124.46.
