Language Interpreter Position

Thank you for your interest in being a language interpreter for the Aberdeen Public School District. Aberdeen Public Schools is always accepting applications for on-call-as needed language interpreters to work at various locations. In this position, you will work with the teachers who support our English Language Learners (ELLs). The position is on an as needed base to provide language interpreting for meetings, parent teacher conferences, phone calls, and sharing of important school information. Such events may be during the school day or in the evenings. Prior to employment, you will be asked to come to the District Service Center to complete the following: DCI/FBI Fingerprinting (cost is $50.00) covered by the Aberdeen School District Form I-9 Form W-4 W-2 Consent Form Employee Basic Information Form Emergency Contact Information Form Direct Deposit Enrollment Form Confidentially form

Interpreter Responsibilities

• Keep all information regarding interpreting assignments and interactions confidential.
• Facilitate communication between persons who are English and non- English speaking.
• Report any concerns to the building principal or ESL Coordinator as soon as possible.

Code of Ethics for Interpreters

You represent not only yourself, but the Aberdeen School District, as well. It is imperative for all interpreters to present themselves in a pleasant and professional manner.

• Keep all information regarding interpreting assignments and interactions confidential.
• Do not interpret for close friends or family members if at all possible.
• Dress appropriately for interpreter assignments.
• Arrive ten minutes prior to scheduled assignments.
• Introduce yourself to the English speaker holding the meeting/conference.
• Ask questions as necessary to clarify information.
• If you arrive at a session that has been cancelled, the student/family does not show, etc.
• Please contact the coordinator/supervisor.
• If you cannot make an appointment, please contact either the ESL contact who hired the interpreter, giving 12-hour notice.

Time sheets can be obtained from the payroll department at the Aberdeen District Service Center (1224 S. 3rd Street). Time sheets must be filled out properly to ensure appropriate and timely delivery of pay. It is the interpreter's responsibility to complete time sheets correctly. If an interpreter has a question or concern, please contact the ESL district contact or payroll department. Misrepresenting time worked is a violation of district policy and may result in termination of services.
