The Opportunity: Member, Board of Directors

Michigan Virtual seeks accomplished executive leaders to serve on its nonprofit Board of Directors. Acting as Ambassadors, Board members provide strategic governance, fiduciary oversight, and executive counsel while helping advance innovation in learning, teaching, and educational technology across Michigan.

What You Can Expect:

·        Quarterly in-person Board meetings

·        Term limits (3-year terms, renewable 3 times)

Core Board Responsibilities:

·        Mission and strategy: Help refine, protect, and advance the organization’s public-purpose mission.

·        Fiduciary oversight: Approve annual budgets, review financial performance, audits, risk, and sustainability.

·        Executive partnership: Support, advise, and evaluate the President & CEO through the Board’s established processes.

·        Policy and accountability: Ensure ethical conduct, transparency, compliance, and effective governance practices.

·        External leadership: Open doors, build relationships, and strengthen partnerships in strategic areas.

·        Inclusive stewardship: bring diverse perspectives, lived experience, and disciplined judgment to decisions that affect learners statewide

Organizational History

Established in 1998, Michigan Virtual is a nationally recognized educational non-profit organization that serves as a statewide champion for online and digital learning in Michigan. Headquartered in Lansing, we serve K-12 students, educators, schools, and districts across all of Michigan. We bring together the best in people and technology to maximize learning and teaching by serving as a laboratory for educational innovation. Michigan Virtual conducts original research, pilots emerging approaches, and works directly with districts to design and implement solutions that improve teaching and learning. We translate work into practice through high-quality online courses for students, professional development programming for educators, and partnerships that position us as a change agent, service provider, and capacity builder for schools across Michigan. Last year, Michigan Virtual served more than 95% of all local school districts in the state, nearly 100% the charter schools, and approximately 75% of all nonpublic schools in Michigan.

Strategic Direction

Michigan Virtual continues to engage in impactful initiatives to support Michigan’s K-12 system. The 2025-2030 Strategic Plan positions Michigan Virtual to help schools and educators navigate innovation to address persistent educational challenges. The plan centers on three strategic priorities:

•                   DRIVE EDUCATIONAL CHANGE : Urgency is increasing in our stakeholders to design, develop, and deploy new educational models that serve diverse learner needs. We partner with educational leaders and empower them with the tools and insights needed for transformation, positioning ourselves as thought leaders in forecasting and adapting to emerging trends in the future of learning.

•                   BROADEN STUDENT PATHWAYS : Many students have difficulty seeing the relevance of their learning, struggle with engagement, and often do not have a clear vision for their future. We will enrich students’ educational journey by expanding access to a diverse array of engaging core and high-interest elective offerings.

•                   POWER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING : Michigan sits on top of an unprecedented need for talent development. We will scale our professional learning services while providing positive experiences that people want to tell their friends and colleagues about.
